SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Dr. Lambertus H. Princen of Peoria, who
4 passed away on October 26, 2008; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Dr. Lambertus Princen was born on August 31, 1930
6 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands; his parents were Herman H.
7 Princen and Engelina C. (Verhoeckx) Princen; he married Greet
8 Wiesen on July 14, 1955 in the Netherlands; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Dr. Lambertus Princen earned his Ph.D. on July 4,
10 1955, and his Doctoral of Science in Chemistry on Jan. 26, 1959
11 from Utrecht University in the Netherlands; he was a
12 postdoctoral at USC from 1955 to 1958; he then returned to the
13 Netherlands to serve in the Dutch Army from 1959 to 1960; and
 
14     WHEREAS, In September of 1960, Dr. Lambertus Princen went
15 to Peoria for a two-year assignment at the USDA National Center
16 for Agricultural Utilization Research laboratory; deciding to
17 stay at the laboratory, he finished his 30-year career as the
18 center's director for seven years before retiring in 1990; he
19 then became editor-in-chief for the Journal of the American Oil
20 Chemists' Society (AOCS) for eight years; he authored 78
21 scientific publications and held three patents; and

1     WHEREAS, Dr. Lambertus Princen was the recipient of
2 numerous awards for his work, including two USDA Superior
3 Service Awards and an Award of Merit from the AOCS; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Dr. Lambertus Princen was a member of the American
5 Chemical Society for 46 years, where he served as chairman of
6 several committees; he also taught chemistry courses at Bradley
7 University; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Dr. Lambertus Princen was a member of numerous
9 civic organizations; he was on the governing boards of the
10 Forest Park Foundation and Three Sisters Park; he was on the
11 boards of Lakeview Museum, the Sun Foundation, and the Audubon
12 Council of Illinois; he was elected to serve as president of
13 the Peoria Academy of Science, Peoria Audubon Society, and the
14 Peoria Orchid Society several times; he was also a member of
15 the Rotary Club of Peoria; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Dr. Lambertus Princen was an avid traveler,
17 visiting more than 40 countries and making video travelogues
18 which he showed at Audubon societies and nursing homes in
19 Chicago, Decatur, and Iowa, among others; he was an avid
20 musician and played many instruments, including the accordion,
21 piano, saxophone, clarinet, violin, and viola; he played for 31
22 years with the Peoria Pops Orchestra, for which he was also the
23 music librarian; he wrote many articles on bird sightings and

1 wrote a monthly column for Adventure Sports Outdoors magazine
2 for 11 years; he also organized the Peoria Christmas Bird
3 Counts and was the first to do a Spring Bird Count in Illinois;
4 and
 
5     WHEREAS, Dr. Lambertus Princen was preceded in death by his
6 parents and his brother, Henry; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Dr. Lambertus Princen is survived by his wife; his
8 son, Norman (Constance) Princen; his sister, Jeanne (Frans)
9 Bakermans; his brother, Herman (Marie-Justine) Princen; and
10 his sister-in-law, Andrea Princen; therefore, be it
 
11     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
12 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
13 his family and friends, the passing of Dr. Lambertus Princen;
14 and be it further
 
15     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to the family of Dr. Lambertus Princen as an
17 expression of our sympathy.
