| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 |
| learn of the death of
George J. Moran of Belleville, who passed |
4 |
| away on July 31, 2008; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, George J. Moran was born on March 14, 1913 in |
6 |
| Granite City; he was a star on the Granite City High School |
7 |
| 1930 football championship team; he graduated from the George |
8 |
| Washington University School of Law in 1937 then returned to |
9 |
| Granite City to practice law; in 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. |
10 |
| Navy, serving as a Second Lieutenant on LST 227; in 1946, he |
11 |
| married the former Cecilia Rogan; and
|
12 |
| WHEREAS, George J. Moran had a long and distinguished legal |
13 |
| career; he argued a case before the United States Supreme Court |
14 |
| in 1954 that established maritime law on inland waterways; he |
15 |
| was elected to the appellate court in 1964; he also practiced |
16 |
| law in Granite City with William Beatty before retiring in |
17 |
| 1980; after his retirement, he was "of counsel" in his |
18 |
| daughter's and son-in-law's firm, Callahan and Moran, P.C., |
19 |
| where he handled environmental cases; and
|
20 |
| WHEREAS, George J. Moran was a member of the Madison County |
21 |
| Bar Association for seventy years and was awarded the Liberty |
22 |
| Bell Award from the Madison County Bar Association in 1981 and |
