2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of William Edward Brady IV, of Galesburg, | ||||||
4 | who passed away on March 9, 2008; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, William Brady was born on December 24, 1926 in | ||||||
6 | Newark, New Jersey, son of William E. Brady III and Alice | ||||||
7 | Quinby Brady; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, William Brady was a 1942 graduate of Newark | ||||||
9 | Academy in Newark, New Jersey; he enlisted in the United States | ||||||
10 | Navy, finishing with an honorable discharge in August, 1946; he | ||||||
11 | completed his undergraduate education at Hobart and William | ||||||
12 | Smith Colleges, Geneva, New York, where he also taught for two | ||||||
13 | years; he later served his Alma Mater with distinction as | ||||||
14 | Alumnus Trustee, from 1966 to 1971, and as class correspondent | ||||||
15 | for 10 years; for these and numerous other services to the | ||||||
16 | college, he was awarded an Alumni Association Citation for | ||||||
17 | exceptional and distinguished service to Hobart and the | ||||||
18 | Association; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, He received his Master's Degree and Ph.D. from | ||||||
20 | Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and taught there | ||||||
21 | during his years as a graduate student; he spent a year at | ||||||
22 | Corpus Christi College, Oxford while completing his |

1 | dissertation; he then moved to the College of the University of | ||||||
2 | Chicago as Assistant Professor where he taught from 1957 to | ||||||
3 | 1962; he also participated in the 1971 summer program at | ||||||
4 | Colorado College as lecturer in art; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, His primary career was at Knox College in | ||||||
6 | Galesburg, where he taught from 1962 until his retirement in | ||||||
7 | 1995; his principal focus was on the works of William | ||||||
8 | Shakespeare and he taught English and American literature, | ||||||
9 | Renaissance literature, and occasionally philosophy, history, | ||||||
10 | the murder mystery genre, and other more esoteric topics; | ||||||
11 | during his years at Knox College he chaired the Publications, | ||||||
12 | Personnel, Executive, and Curriculum Committees and was twice | ||||||
13 | Chairman of the English Department; from 1984-1987 he served as | ||||||
14 | Faculty Secretary; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, He was honored with the Knox College Burlington | ||||||
16 | Northern Faculty Achievement award in 1988; this prize is | ||||||
17 | granted for superior scholarship and excellence in classroom | ||||||
18 | teaching; and | ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, William Brady is survived by his wife, Sydney; his | ||||||
20 | two daughters, Elizabeth (Paul) Cimino and Mary Catherine "Zoe" | ||||||
21 | Brady; his son, William Edward Brady V; his sister, Mary | ||||||
22 | Ramsbotham; his three grandchildren, Andrew and Emma Cimino and | ||||||
23 | Sarah Sopher; his great-granddaughter, Camellia |

1 | Sopher-Cardiel; his uncle, Frank Quinby; and many nieces and | ||||||
2 | nephews; therefore, be it
| ||||||
3 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL | ||||||
4 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
5 | his family, friends, and former students, the passing of | ||||||
6 | William Brady; and be it further
| ||||||
7 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
8 | presented to the family of William Edward Brady IV as a symbol | ||||||
9 | of our sympathy.
