SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Collinsville Mayor Stanley Schaeffer, who
4 passed away on March 7, 2008; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Stanley Schaeffer was born on April 1, 1936 in
6 East St. Louis; he married the former Elizabeth A. McAtee on
7 December 12, 1987, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church; he
8 earned his bachelor's degree from Quincy University and his
9 master's degree from Southern Illinois University; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Stanley Schaeffer was employed in the education
11 field for more than 40 years; he served as athletic director
12 and as an English and history teacher at Assumption High School
13 in East St. Louis for 10 years before moving to Collinsville;
14 he then became a English, history, creative writing, and social
15 studies teacher at Collinsville High School; he retired in
16 2004, after decades of dedicated service as a teacher and
17 guidance counselor at Collinsville High School; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Stanley Schaeffer also served as a football,
19 basketball, track, cross country, and softball coach at
20 Collinsville High School for 35 years; he was inducted into the
21 St. Louis Metro Senior Softball Hall of Fame on September 4,
22 1997; and

1     WHEREAS, Stanley Schaeffer served on the Collinsville City
2 Council for 8 years before he was elected mayor of
3 Collinsville; he served as mayor until his unfortunate passing;
4 and
 
5     WHEREAS, As mayor of Collinsville, Stanley Schaeffer
6 aggressively sought out commercial development opportunities,
7 particularly the $53 million Collinsville Crossing shopping
8 center; he also acted as ambassador for the city in State
9 organizations like the Illinois Municipal League, which aided
10 the city's economic development plans immensely; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Stanley Schaeffer was well known to the citizens
12 of Collinsville as an honest, capable, and effective leader and
13 public servant, as proved by his two successful reelection
14 campaigns; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Stanley Schaeffer was a member of many civic
16 organizations, such as the Illinois Municipal League Board of
17 Directors, the Illinois Tax Increment Financing Association,
18 the National League of Cities' Community and Economic
19 Development Committee, the Advisory Board for Sanford-Brown
20 College, the East-West Gateway Council of Governments, the
21 Executive Committee of the Metro Mayors of the St. Louis
22 Region, the Metropolitan Forum, and the St. Louis Area Regional

2     WHEREAS, Stanley Schaeffer is survived by his wife; his
3 daughter, Carrie L. (Rob) Beck; his stepdaughters, Linda
4 (Geoff) Clenney, Paula Hall, and Jami Coderre; his stepsons,
5 Timothy P. (Shannon) Combs and Scott M. (Wendy) Combs; his
6 brothers-in-law, Edward J. McAtee, John F. (Mary Beth) McAtee,
7 and William A. (Leah) McAtee; his special friend, Rip; and his
8 grandchildren, Schaeffer Beck, Grayson Beck, Cameron Combs,
9 Madeline Combs, Jacques Combs, Jocelyn Combs, Erin Combs, Megan
10 Combs, Kate Combs, Molly Combs, Kirsten Clenney, Logan Clenney,
11 Dylan Hall, Keylon Coderre, and Ethan Coderre; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Stanley Schaeffer was preceded in death by his
13 parents, Elmer and Christina (Huff) Schaeffer; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Stanley Schaeffer will be remembered by all who
15 knew and loved him as an even-tempered, affable, and loyal
16 husband, father, and public servant; his passing will be
17 mourned by his loving family, his wonderful friends, and the
18 many constituents that he served with integrity and respect;
19 therefore, be it
 
20     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
21 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
22 his family and friends, the passing of Stanley Schaeffer; and

2     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3 presented to the family of Stanley Schaeffer as an expression
4 of our sympathy.
