SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of William W. Schooley Jr. of Granite City,
4 who passed away on November 12, 2007; and
 
5     WHEREAS, William Schooley was born on April 2, 1929, in
6 Granite City; a lifelong Granite City resident, William
7 Schooley graduated from Granite City High School in 1947 after
8 a string of winning seasons as a football and track and field
9 player; in 1946, playing in the Number 48 jersey, he was part
10 of the team that won the Southwest Conference Championship, the
11 same year he was named a Prep Football Player of the Year; and
 
12     WHEREAS, He graduated valedictorian of his class of 1947
13 and in 1951 attended the United States Military Academy at West
14 Point in New York, where he also played football for the Army;
15 and
 
16     WHEREAS, After his time at West Point, he was deployed
17 overseas to serve in the Korea War; in the 1960s, he attended
18 Saint Louis University and received a law degree, eventually
19 opening his own personal injury firm in Granite City; he held
20 membership in the Madison County Bar Association, where he
21 became president; later, his client list included mostly
22 municipal agencies, including the Granite City school board,

1 Granite City Township and the Madison County Regional Board of
2 Education; and
 
3     WHEREAS, William Schooley played an important role in the
4 creation of the Granite City Sports Hall of Fame, a collection
5 of memorabilia, photos, and trophies from the city's storied
6 athletic past housed at the Nelson Hagnauer Sports Complex; the
7 center opened in 1986 and was largely funded by Mr. Schooley,
8 although he never sought credit for it; and
 
9     WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents, Martha
10 (Greene) Lengyel and William W. Schooley Sr; and
 
11     WHEREAS, William Schooley Jr. is survived by his four sons,
12 William W. Schooley III, Rick (Joyce) Schooley, Jack (Barb)
13 Schooley, and Thomas (Kathy) Schooley; his daughters, Cassie
14 (Mark) Iken, and Billie Jo Schooley; and his fourteen
15 grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
16     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
17 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
18 his family and friends, the passing of William W. Schooley Jr.;
19 and be it further
 
20     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21 presented to the family of William W. Schooley Jr. as a symbol
