SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Joseph O. Madison of Alton, who passed
4 away on November 14, 2007; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Joseph Madison was born October 11, 1936, in Alton
6 to Carrol and Sophie (Smith) Madison; he and his wife, the
7 former Ruby Parker, were married in 1971; and
 
8     WHEREAS, He was a United States Army veteran and was
9 retired from Labor Local 218 of Godfrey; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Joseph Madison was a member of Dunbar Masonic
11 Lodge 97, he was grandmaster of the Masons, Illinois Edgar
12 Falconer in 1977, and a member of Tyree Consistory 64 and Ahmes
13 Shriners Temple 132; he was a member of the United Supreme
14 Council of the 33rd degree of Masonry Scottish Rites, Allen
15 Bevenue American Legion Post 354, and served as chairman of the
16 Black United Christian Front Organization; he was a member of
17 the Coalition of Concerned Citizens, and he served three years
18 of community service on the community board of Better Homes for
19 Alton; and
 
20     WHEREAS, Joseph Madison was appointed to sit on the board
21 of the Legal Aid Society by attorney Clayton Williams; he was

1 signatory to former Governor Ogilvie on an agreement to train
2 blacks for road work; he worked with the late Reverend Carl
3 Bradshaw; he was involved in breaking down Jim Crow practices
4 in the area; he was involved in the march against police
5 brutality; and he was involved in the boycott of Sears
6 Department Store; and
 
7     WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents; seven
8 brothers, Eric, Albert Lee, Ervin, Richard, Carl, Charlie, and
9 Ronnie Madison; three sisters, Georgia Madison, Norma Madison
10 Smith, and Mary Madison Lacey; and a son, Robert Phillips; and
 
11     WHEREAS, In addition to his wife, surviving are five
12 children, David Piggee, Joseph Fuller, Vincent Pope, Anthony
13 Jones and Mary Mitchell; 13 grandchildren; 12
14 great-grandchildren; and special children, Margaret Ndyaiye,
15 Bessie Bell, Christine Rhea, Albert Fuller and Charles Fuller;
16 therefore, be it
 
17     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
18 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
19 his family and friends, the passing of Joseph Madison; and be
20 it further
 
21     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22 presented to the family of Joseph Madison as a symbol of our
