| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 |
| learn of the death of
Bob Markowitz of Normal, who passed away |
4 |
| on September 6, 2007; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, Bob Markowitz was born on February 14, 1926 in |
6 |
| Chicago; his parents were Dr. Benjamin and Lena Molay |
7 |
| Markowitz; he married Iris Cohos in 1956; he married Judy Stern |
8 |
| Harrison in 1975; and
|
9 |
| WHEREAS, Bob Markowitz moved with his family to Bloomington |
10 |
| in 1930, when his father became Bloomington's first |
11 |
| pathologist, in association with the Sloan Clinic; Bob attended |
12 |
| Washington School and graduated from Bloomington High School in |
13 |
| January 1944; after high school, he enlisted as a private first |
14 |
| class in the United States Army, where he fought in the |
15 |
| Rhineland and Ardennes campaigns during the Second World War as |
16 |
| a combat infantryman; he was wounded in action on February 17, |
17 |
| 1945, just three days after his 19th birthday; he was awarded |
18 |
| the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals and was honorably |
19 |
| discharged in September 1945; and
|
20 |
| WHEREAS, After his honorable discharge from the Army, Bob |
21 |
| Markowitz went to the University of Wisconsin, where he served |
22 |
| as president of his fraternity, Zeta Beta Tau; at the |
|
|

| University of Wisconsin, he earned his bachelor's degree and |
2 |
| law degrees; after being admitted to the Bar in Wisconsin, he |
3 |
| passed the Illinois Bar exam, and started his law practice in |
4 |
| Bloomington in 1952; in 1956, he formed a partnership with |
5 |
| attorneys Keith Campbell and Bill Lawrence, forming the law |
6 |
| partnership of Campbell, Markowitz, Lawrence and Lenz, which |
7 |
| soon included attorneys Hal Jennings, John Naylor, and William |
8 |
| Mueller; he served as the city attorney for the City of |
9 |
| Bloomington and then served as Corporation Counsel for the Town |
10 |
| of Normal from 1970 to 1973; and
|
11 |
| WHEREAS, Bob Markowitz was a private pilot and avid |
12 |
| fisherman; his community service included membership on the OSF |
13 |
| St. Joseph Community Board, and he served for six years on the |
14 |
| board of directors of the YMCA; he was an active member of the |
15 |
| Novat Unit of the Shriners and the Moses Montefiore Temple; and
|
16 |
| WHEREAS, Bob Markowitz is survived by his wife, Judy; his |
17 |
| children, Brad (Sheryl) Markowitz and Robin (Daniel) |
18 |
| Markowitz; his sister, Nan Markowitz Lebow; his nieces and |
19 |
| nephews, Mark (Donna) Lebow, Alan (Susan) Lebow, and Cheryl |
20 |
| (David Golde) Lebow; and his stepsons, Ian and Scott Harrison; |
21 |
| therefore, be it
