SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Thomas G. Scullen of Appleton, Wisconsin,
4 formerly of Aurora, who passed away on May 30, 2007; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Thomas G. Scullen, Ed.D. impacted thousands of
6 school children, teachers, athletes, coaches, and other
7 educators during the course of his 45-year commitment to public
8 education; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Tom Scullen was born August 9, 1938 in Detroit,
10 Michigan, the son of the late James and Kathleen (nee Murphy)
11 Scullen and brother to the late Patricia (Richard) McCausland;
12 on November 26, 1960, Tom married his high school sweetheart,
13 Janet Gohlke, at St. Raymond Catholic Church in Detroit; he was
14 a student and athlete at St. Charles Borromeo grade school and
15 high school and won a football scholarship to the University of
16 Detroit, where he received his undergraduate degree; and
 
17     WHEREAS, He received his graduate degrees at Eastern
18 Michigan University and Wayne State University; he worked in
19 Michigan public school districts in Oak Park, L'Anse Creuse,
20 and Chippewa Valley from 1962 to 1985; he then served as the
21 Superintendent of Indian Prairie School District 204 in
22 Naperville from 1985 to 1995, and was selected as the 1993

1 Superintendent of the Year by the Illinois Association of
2 School Administrators; he was later honored by the 2001 opening
3 of the Thomas G. Scullen Middle School in Naperville; and
 
4     WHEREAS, During the height of his career from 1995 until
5 2007, Tom Scullen served as the Superintendent of the Appleton,
6 Wisconsin Area School District; in 2003 he was selected as the
7 Superintendent of the Year, by the Wisconsin Association of
8 School District Administrators; in 2007, he was greatly honored
9 when the Appleton Area School District acknowledged his
10 leadership skills by renaming the administration building the
11 Thomas G. Scullen Leadership Center; a scholarship fund has
12 been established in his name to sustain his influence on
13 leadership development in the Fox Valley for years to come; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Thomas Scullen is survived by his wife, Jan; his
15 children, Mary Kay (Tim) Gallagher and their daughters, Katie
16 and Sarah, Sandi Scullen, and Michael (Liesl) Scullen and their
17 children, Lindsey and Sean; his sister, Sandy Scullen; his
18 brother, James (Marcia) Scullen; his brother-in-law, David
19 (Carol) Gohlke; his sisters-in-law, Carol (Norb) Caron and
20 Nancy (Randy) Gabeline; and by his nieces, nephews, other
21 relatives, and many friends and colleagues; therefore, be it
 
22     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
23 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with

1 his family and friends, the passing of Thomas Scullen; and be
2 it further
 
3     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4 presented to the family of Thomas Scullen as a symbol of our
5 sympathy and deep respect.
