2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Donald L. Cannon of Gurnee, who passed | ||||||
4 | away on June 16, 2007; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Donald Cannon was born in Waukegan on October 9, | ||||||
6 | 1928, the seventh child of Leslie and Mary "Mamie" Cannon and | ||||||
7 | grew up in Gurnee with his five sisters and one brother; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS,
Donald Cannon attended Gurnee Grade School and was | ||||||
9 | a Class of 1946 graduate from Warren Township High School, | ||||||
10 | where he excelled on the football and baseball fields and on | ||||||
11 | the basketball court; his skill in football led to a full four | ||||||
12 | year scholarship to Northeast Missouri State Teacher's College | ||||||
13 | in Kirksville, Missouri, from which he graduated in 1950; he | ||||||
14 | continued his football career playing for the United States | ||||||
15 | Army and the Waukegan Merchants, a local semi-pro team; after | ||||||
16 | college he entered the United States Army Airborne Division and | ||||||
17 | served as a paratrooper during the Korean War; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, He married Elaine Jahnke at St. Patrick's Church | ||||||
19 | in West Lake Forest on May 23, 1953; after working briefly for | ||||||
20 | the Hough Company and Standard Oil Company, Don became a | ||||||
21 | popular businessman, owning Cannon and Myers Service Stations | ||||||
22 | in Grayslake and in Third Lake, from which he retired in April, |

1 | 1989; he was a member of the Gurnee Community Church; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, He will be remembered as a man with a great sense | ||||||
3 | of humor who loved birds and gardening; he was an avid reader | ||||||
4 | and sports enthusiast, as well as a man who loved to play golf | ||||||
5 | and bridge with his friends, and Monopoly with his two | ||||||
6 | grandchildren; during his golfing days, he shot three | ||||||
7 | holes-in-one; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Donald Cannon is survived by his wife, Barbara | ||||||
9 | (Richardson) whom he married in August 1991; his children, | ||||||
10 | Michael (Kathleen), and Christopher (Kim); his grandchildren, | ||||||
11 | Cody and Cassidy and Mary Lou (Doug Murphy); his sisters, Norma | ||||||
12 | Cunningham and Dorothy (Ed) Bennecke Bonovitz; and his many | ||||||
13 | nieces and nephews; he was preceded in death by his parents; | ||||||
14 | siblings, Nellie Porter, Russell Cannon, Beulah Porter, and | ||||||
15 | Carol Lodesky; his first wife, Elaine; and his daughter, | ||||||
16 | Kimberly; therefore, be it

17 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL | ||||||
18 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
19 | his family and friends, the passing of Donald Cannon; and be it | ||||||
20 | further
| ||||||
21 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
22 | presented to the family of Donald L. Cannon as a symbol of our |
