SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Purvis Smith of Alton, who passed away on
4 June 18, 2007; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Purvis Smith was born on October 19, 1928 in
6 Clarksdale, Mississippi; his parents were Simon and Millie
7 (Miller) Smith; he married the former Norma Jean Madison; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Purvis Smith was a U.S. Army veteran; he received
9 his formal education in Clarksdale; he was a foreman at Laclede
10 Steel Company for 40 years until his retirement in 1991; he was
11 a lifetime member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church and
12 Dunbar Masonic Lodge 97; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Purvis Smith was a political advocator; in the
14 1960's he marched for civil rights to abolish the Jim Crow laws
15 plaguing the country; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Purvis Smith was preceded in death by his wife;
17 his parents; his son, Willie T. Smith; and his siblings,
18 Octavia Campbell, Rosie Wilkerson, Carrie Turner, Ara Conley,
19 Lela Murray, Maggie Patterson, Emma Moore, and Nan, Mary,
20 Sonny, William, Malloy, Charlie, and Simon Smith; and

1     WHEREAS, Purvis Smith is survived by his son, Brian (Gina)
2 Williams; his daughters, Machell (Sidney Turner III) Williams,
3 DeeSheryl (Gregory) Walker, and Norma Jean James; his
4 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sister, Wreary
5 Bounds; his special nephew, Ramon Lacey; his brother-in-law,
6 Joseph (Ruby) Madison; and his many nieces, nephews, cousins,
7 and friends; therefore, be it
 
8     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
9 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
10 his family and friends, the passing of Purvis Smith; and be it
11 further
 
12     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13 presented to the family of Purvis Smith as an expression of our
14 sympathy.
