| SENATE RESOLUTION
|
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, Illinois is the fifth largest immigrant receiving |
| 3 |
| state in the U.S., with approximately 20% of the State's |
| 4 |
| population being either foreign-born or children of |
| 5 |
| immigrants; and
|
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, Less than 40% of the 1,600,000 immigrants in |
| 7 |
| Illinois are currently U.S. citizens; and
|
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, Nearly 440,000 immigrants in the State will soon |
| 9 |
| become eligible to become citizens; and
|
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, Currently just 32,000 immigrants of the State |
| 11 |
| become U.S. citizens each year; and
|
| 12 |
| WHEREAS, The New Americans Initiative was created and |
| 13 |
| designed to (i) directly assist immigrants in Illinois to |
| 14 |
| become U.S. citizens; (ii) encourage immigrants to |
| 15 |
| independently initiate their naturalization process; and (iii) |
| 16 |
| help new citizens participate fully in civic life in Illinois; |
| 17 |
| therefore, be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL |
| 19 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge the Governor to |
| 20 |
| support funding for The New Americans Initiative; and be it |
