SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Joseph B. Cicero of the Albany Park
4 neighborhood of Chicago, who passed away on January 12, 2007;
5 and
 
6     WHEREAS, Mr. Cicero was born in Chicago in 1938; he was a
7 graduate of Amundsen High School, where he played center on the
8 football team; he was a 1960 graduate of the University of
9 Illinois and a 1963 graduate of the University of Chicago Law
10 School; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Mr. Cicero worked as a labor-union attorney for
12 the Central States Joint Board AFL-CIO until 1976, when he took
13 the full-time position of executive director of the North River
14 Commission, an umbrella organization made up of about 100
15 smaller neighborhood organizations, he retired from that
16 position after 21 years; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Joseph Cicero worked to save the Northwest Side
18 nature preserve from developers in the early 1970s; today the
19 property is known as North Park Village, and includes a park,
20 fitness center, educational facilities, subsidized senior
21 citizen housing, and 46 acres of nature preserve; and

1     WHEREAS, He is also responsible for revitalizing the Albany
2 Park area when others were giving up the community; he pushed
3 for the opening of a gifted student high school, resulting in
4 Northside College Preparatory High School opening in 1999; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Joseph B. Cicero is survived by his wife, Marilyn
6 nee Karpinski; his children, Marc (Lindsey), Lisa (Matt)
7 Wilson, and Erica (Joseph) Shidle; his grandchildren, Cecilia
8 and Julia Wilson, Margo Cicero, and Laura Shidle; he was
9 preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Theresa Cicero;
10 therefore, be it
 
11     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
12 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
13 his family and friends, the passing of Joseph B. Cicero; and be
14 it further
 
15     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to the family of Joseph B. Cicero as a symbol of our
17 respect.
