SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Thomas G. Lyons of Chicago, who passed
4 away on January 12, 2007; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Thomas Lyons, the 45th ward committeeman, was
6 first elected the chairman of the Cook County Democratic Party
7 in 1970, a position he held for nearly seventeen years; he was
8 a native of Chicago, a former police officer and an attorney
9 since 1957; he served as chief attorney for the Cook County
10 Assessor's Office from 1958 to 1960 before joining the office
11 of the Illinois Attorney General; and
 
12     WHEREAS, He was elected State Senator in 1964; the next
13 year he was elected to serve in a leadership role for the State
14 commission studying the need for a new State constitution; he
15 was later elected a delegate to the 1970 Constitutional
16 Convention, serving as vice-president during the drafting of
17 the 1970 Illinois Constitution; and
 
18     WHEREAS, While serving in the Illinois Senate he served as
19 chairman of the appropriations committee; and he served as a
20 delegate to the Democratic National Convention from 1968 to
21 2000; and

1     WHEREAS, Thomas Lyons was named a Knight of the Holy
2 Sepulchre by the late Joseph Cardinal Bernardin and was awarded
3 a Medal of Excellence by the Loyola University Chicago School
4 of Law; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mr. Lyons was named by former President Bill
6 Clinton to the American Battle Monuments Commission as a
7 reflection of his dedication to military service; in the 1950s
8 Mr. Lyons served in the United States Army and became a captain
9 of the Army Rangers; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Thomas G. Lyons is survived by his loving wife,
11 Ruth; his sons, Frank and Thomas; his daughters, Alexandra
12 Cooney and Rachel Cooper; his eight grandchildren; and many
13 good friends and admirers; therefore, be it
 
14     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
15 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
16 his family and friends, the passing of Thomas G. Lyons; and be
17 it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to the family of Thomas G. Lyons as an expression of
20 our deepest sympathy for their loss.
