60 ILCS 1/25-10-5 new

    Amends the Township Code. Provides that township organization may cease in an individual township if three-fourths of the registered voters in the township vote against the continuance of township organization. Effective immediately.

1     AN ACT concerning local government.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Township Code is amended by adding Section
5 25-10-5 as follows:
 
6     (60 ILCS 1/25-10-5 new)
7     Sec. 25-10-5. Cessation of township organization within an
8 individual township. Upon the petition of at least 10% of the
9 registered voters of an individual township, the township board
10 shall certify and cause to be submitted to the voters of the
11 township, at the next general election, the question of whether
12 township organization shall continue in that township. The
13 proposition shall be substantially in the form:
14         "Shall township organization be continued in (name of
15     township)?"
16     If it appears by the returns of the election that at least
17 three-fourths of the registered voters in the township are
18 against the continuance of township organization, then
19 township organization shall cease in that township.
 
20     Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
21 becoming law.
