SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
605 ILCS 5/4-105 new

    Amends the Illinois Highway Code. Provides that, within 30 days of a receipt of a written request by the Director of the State Police, the Secretary of Transportation shall name an interstate, State highway, or segment of an interstate or State highway in honor and memory of one or more Illinois State Troopers killed in the line of duty. Sets out the requirements for the written request. Provides that the Secretary shall consult with the Director of State Police on the design of the road signs and shall erect the appropriate highway signs within 30 days of receipt of the written request.

1     AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Illinois Highway Code is amended by adding
5 Section 4-105 as follows:
 
6     (605 ILCS 5/4-105 new)
7     Sec. 4-105. Naming of interstates and State highways; State
8 Troopers.
9     (a) The Secretary of Transportation shall, within 30 days
10 of receipt of a written request by the Director of State
11 Police, name an interstate, State highway, or segment of an
12 interstate or State highway in honor and memory of one or more
13 Illinois State Troopers killed in the line of duty. The written
14 request shall include:
15         (1) the State Trooper's name;
16         (2) the name and address of any living relatives of the
17     State trooper, if known;
18         (3) the date and circumstances of the State Trooper's
19     death; and
20         (4) the mile marker and current name of the interstate
21     or State highway where the State Trooper was killed.
22     (b) The Secretary of Transportation shall consult with the
23 Director of State Police on the design of the road signs naming

1 the interstate, State highway, or road segment in honor and
2 memory of each State Trooper and shall erect the appropriate
3 highway signs within 30 days of receipt of the written request.
4     (c) If the road segment identified in the request has
5 already been named for another individual or organization,
6 either by action of the General Assembly or by order of the
7 Secretary of Transportation, the Secretary of Transportation
8 and the Director of State Police shall consult on and determine
9 an alternate location that is acceptable to both agencies.
