| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 |
| Representatives are pleased to congratulate Ray Harris on the |
4 |
| occasion of his retirement from AFSCME Council 31; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, Ray Harris has served as Director of |
6 |
| Intergovernmental Affairs of AFSCME Council 31 since June of |
7 |
| 1987; and
|
8 |
| WHEREAS, In his more than 20 years as a lobbyist, Ray |
9 |
| Harris has not only served the interests of AFSCME members |
10 |
| employed by Cook County with dedication, he has become one of |
11 |
| the most well-known and well-respected union lobbyists of the |
12 |
| Cook County Board; and
|
13 |
| WHEREAS, Ray Harris has served the interests of all the |
14 |
| residents of Cook County in his efforts to preserve access to |
15 |
| public health care; and
|
16 |
| WHEREAS, A Chicago native, Ray Harris was raised on the |
17 |
| West Side of Chicago; and
|
18 |
| WHEREAS, Ray Harris began his career with AFSCME as an |
19 |
| International union organizer in 1985 to work on a campaign to |
20 |
| organize Cook County employees; he was then hired by AFSCME |
|

| Council 31 as a lobbyist in 1986; and
|
2 |
| WHEREAS, Prior to his association with AFSCME, Ray Harris |
3 |
| worked at International Harvester, beginning on the shop floor |
4 |
| in 1970; he became a union steward in 1971, was elected |
5 |
| Alternate Committeeman in 1974, and then elected Committeeman |
6 |
| in 1979, a position he kept until he left Harvester in 1984; |
7 |
| and
|
8 |
| WHEREAS, Ray Harris has never forgotten that working men |
9 |
| and women need a voice; he has spoken just as passionately for |
10 |
| their interests in the halls of power in Cook County as he did |
11 |
| on the shop floor; and |
12 |
| WHEREAS, While Ray Harris, to whom no one is ever a |
13 |
| stranger, will be missed by his peers, his retirement will give |
14 |
| him more time to devote to his family, especially his beautiful |
15 |
| and supportive wife of 39 years, Mimi Harris, and his beloved |
16 |
| granddaughter, Rayven Harris; therefore, be it
|

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
18 |
| NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
19 |
| congratulate Ray Harris on the occasion of his retirement and |
20 |
| wish him many happy and healthy retirement years; and be it |
