2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the owners of The | ||||||
4 | Swedish Bakery on the occasion of their 80th anniversary as | ||||||
5 | part of the Andersonville neighborhood and a proud part of | ||||||
6 | history on Chicago's north side; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, The Swedish Bakery was originally opened to the | ||||||
8 | Andersonville community by the Johnson family in the 1920s; in | ||||||
9 | 1940, the bakery was sold to Ernest Carlson; later, in 1964, | ||||||
10 | the bakery was purchased by Gosta Bjuhr, who hired Marlies | ||||||
11 | Stanton, The Swedish Bakery's current owner; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Marlies' passion for baking began at an early age | ||||||
13 | in her parents' pastry shop in Dusseldorf, Germany; after the | ||||||
14 | family business suffered untimely destruction during World War | ||||||
15 | II, Marlies trained to be a professional pastry chef while | ||||||
16 | still living in Europe; being among so many immigrants to the | ||||||
17 | United States after the war years, Marlies made her way to | ||||||
18 | Chicago in 1953, obtaining a job at the legendary Edgewater | ||||||
19 | Beach Hotel, where she met her husband-to-be, George Stanton; | ||||||
20 | after leaving the hotel, Marlies became a part of The Swedish | ||||||
21 | Bakery family; after eight years of working with Gosta Bjuhr, | ||||||
22 | and upon Gosta's retirement in 1979, Marlies Stanton purchased | ||||||
23 | The Swedish Bakery; and

1 | WHEREAS, Between 1979 and 1991, Marlies' family members | ||||||
2 | came to work at the bakery, creating a true and genuine family | ||||||
3 | business; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, The Swedish Bakery's expansion, which began in | ||||||
5 | 1989, was finally completed in 1992; with the company's new | ||||||
6 | growth, almost tripling its size to over 6000 square feet, The | ||||||
7 | Swedish Bakery is one of the largest family-owned bakeries in | ||||||
8 | Chicago, with a staff that has grown from 19 employees to its | ||||||
9 | current staff of 55; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Even though the bakery has prospered and grown, | ||||||
11 | the Stanton family has kept the bakery true to its neighborhood | ||||||
12 | sweet shop roots; baked goods still consist of the traditional | ||||||
13 | Swedish products as well as other European and old-fashioned | ||||||
14 | American favorites; the Stantons only use the highest quality | ||||||
15 | ingredients to create the very finest bakery products; | ||||||
16 | therefore, be it

17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
18 | NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
19 | congratulate the owners of The Swedish Bakery on the company's | ||||||
20 | 80th year of business serving the Andersonville and Chicago | ||||||
21 | communities and wish them continued success in the future; and | ||||||
22 | be it further
