HOUSE RESOLUTION


 
2
    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives are saddened to  learn of the death of
United 
4
States Army Staff Sergeant Kevin D. Grieco, who was killed in 
5
action in Pol-e Khomri, Afghanistan on October 27, 2008; and

 
6
    WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Kevin Grieco was born in Frankfort, 
7
Germany on October 25, 1973; he lived the first 18 years of his 
8
life as an "Army brat", moving from base to base with his 
9
family, including stays in the United States and two tours in 
10
Germany; he later attended Waynesville High School in 
11
Waynesville, Missouri, and after graduation became the third 
12
generation of his family to join the United States Armed Forces 
13
when he enlisted in the United States Navy; and

 
14
    WHEREAS, In 1997, after five years in the U.S. Navy, Staff 
15
Sergeant Kevin Grieco joined the Navy Reserve and moved to 
16
Winfield with his parents to begin his academic career; after 
17
taking classes at North Central College and joining the ROTC at 
18
Wheaton College, he earned his bachelor's degree in outdoor 
19
recreation and leadership from Aurora University in 2004; and

 
20
    WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Kevin Grieco's passion for his 
21
country spurred him to rejoin the military in June of 2006, 
22
when he joined the Illinois National Guard and was placed in

the 2nd Battalion, 122nd Field Artillery; in June of 2008, his 
2
unit was federalized and brought to the active component; after 
3
two months of training at Fort Bragg, he was sent to 
4
Afghanistan to provide security for Afghani police training in 
5
and around his base in Konduz, where he served until his 
6
unfortunate passing; and

 
7
    WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Kevin Grieco was the recipient of 
8
numerous awards for his dedicated service in Afghanistan, 
9
including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart; he was also the 
10
recipient of the Afghan Campaign Medal, the United Nations War 
11
on Terrorism Service Medal, the Abraham Lincoln Freedom Medal, 
12
the Army Good Conduct Medal, and the Combat
Action Badge; and

 
13
    WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Kevin Grieco joined the Cub Scouts 
14
in 1982 and, within the span of seven years, achieved the 
15
honorable title of Eagle Scout; still a dedicated Scout, he 
16
volunteered as a scout leader for Troop 575 in Winfield at the 
17
age of 24; and

 
18
    WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Kevin Grieco and his beloved wife, 
19
Rashmi Chawathe Grieco, were blessed with two children, Joshua 
20
Grieco and Angeli Grieco; and
 
21
    WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Kevin Grieco's selfless acts of 
22
dedication and patriotism serve as a model to follow for the

people of the State of Illinois and the nation at large; 
2
therefore, be it

    RESOLVED, BY THE  HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
4
NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
5
mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of United 
6
States Army Staff Sergeant Kevin D. Grieco; and be it further

 
7
    RESOLVED, That we honor the memory of Staff Sergeant Kevin 
8
Grieco and  his willingness to serve our country, which led to 
9
him making  the ultimate sacrifice; and be it further
 
10
    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
11
presented to the family of Staff Sergeant Kevin Grieco as an 
12
expression of our sympathy.
