| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Governors State University will celebrate its | ||||||
3 | 40th anniversary in 2009 and is to be commended for its | ||||||
4 | commitment to educational excellence and service to the | ||||||
5 | surrounding communities, the region, and the State of Illinois; | ||||||
6 | and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Governors State University was founded in 1969, | ||||||
8 | making it the only public university in the Chicago Southland; | ||||||
9 | and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Governors State University is recognized as a | ||||||
11 | regional leader in education, economic development, and public | ||||||
12 | service; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS,
Governors State University is comprised of four | ||||||
14 | academic colleges offering twenty-two bachelor's, twenty-five | ||||||
15 | master's, four doctoral, and twenty-three certificate | ||||||
16 | programs; and | ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Governors State University has graduated more | ||||||
18 | than 40,000 successful alumni; and | ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Governors State University is committed to | ||||||
20 | serving underserved populations, including minorities and |

| |||||||
1 | returning adult students; and | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Forty-five percent of the university's student | ||||||
3 | population and twenty-eight percent of its faculty are | ||||||
4 | minority, exceeding national averages; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Governors State University has expanded its | ||||||
6 | positive impact on the region through the establishment of more | ||||||
7 | than 50 satellite locations, including education centers in | ||||||
8 | Kankakee and Naperville; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Governors State University purposely maintains | ||||||
10 | the most affordable tuition in the State to make education | ||||||
11 | accessible to all; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Governors State University serves the region | ||||||
13 | through its centers of excellence, including The CenterPoint | ||||||
14 | for Entrepreneurs, the Institute for the Care and Study of | ||||||
15 | Vulnerable Populations, the Metropolitan Institute for | ||||||
16 | Leadership Education, and the Center for Law Enforcement | ||||||
17 | Technology Collaboration; and | ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Governors State University makes significant | ||||||
19 | contributions to the arts though The Center for Performing Arts | ||||||
20 | and the internationally recognized Nathan Manilow Sculpture | ||||||
21 | Park; and

1 | WHEREAS, Governors State University represents the | ||||||
2 | importance of remembering its rich educational heritage, while | ||||||
3 | facing the opportunities of the present and preparing for the | ||||||
4 | challenges of the future; therefore, be it
| ||||||
5 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
6 | NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
7 | again congratulate everyone who has worked over the last forty | ||||||
8 | years to make Governors State University an important part of | ||||||
9 | the Illinois educational system; and be it further
| ||||||
10 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
11 | presented to Elaine P. Maimon, President of Governors State | ||||||
12 | University, as a symbol of our respect.
