| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The Save A Star Drug Awareness Foundation was |
3 |
| established in memory of Daniel Lee Katz, a 25-year old |
4 |
| resident of Highland Park, who died of a prescription drug |
5 |
| overdose on June 15, 2007; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, The Save A Star Drug Awareness Foundation has |
7 |
| partnered with the DEA Educational Foundation in Washington, |
8 |
| D.C. to bring the message of awareness to parents and children |
9 |
| all across America through the Rx Factor Traveling Exhibit; and
|
10 |
| WHEREAS, The objective of the Rx Factor Traveling Exhibit |
11 |
| is to promote the creation of drug-free communities through |
12 |
| drug prevention efforts, education, parental involvement, and |
13 |
| community-wide support; and
|
14 |
| WHEREAS, Prescription drug abuse is one of the major |
15 |
| challenges that the nation faces in securing a safe and healthy |
16 |
| future for families in the United States; and
|
17 |
| WHEREAS, Prescription drug abuse contributes to domestic |
18 |
| violence and sexual assault and places the lives of children at |
19 |
| risk; and
|
20 |
| WHEREAS, Although public awareness of prescription drug |
|
|

| abuse is increasing, prescription medications are among the |
2 |
| most abused drugs by young people in the United States, and the |
3 |
| growing epidemic demands attention; and |
4 |
| WHEREAS, Between 1996 and 2006, the percentages of |
5 |
| admissions to substance abuse treatment programs as a result of |
6 |
| the abuse of methamphetamines, prescription medications, and |
7 |
| marijuana each rose significantly; and |
8 |
| WHEREAS, A dramatic increase in illegal Internet |
9 |
| pharmacies selling controlled drugs without the need of a |
10 |
| prescription is causing a rise in the abuse of prescription |
11 |
| drugs in the United States; and |
12 |
| WHEREAS, Drug dealers specifically target children by |
13 |
| marketing illicit drugs that mimic the appearance and names of |
14 |
| well known brand-name candies and foods; and |
15 |
| WHEREAS, Parents, youth, schools, businesses, law |
16 |
| enforcement agencies, religious institutions, service |
17 |
| organizations, senior citizens, medical and military |
18 |
| personnel, sports teams, and individuals throughout the United |
19 |
| States will experience the Rx Factor Traveling Exhibit in |
20 |
| venues all over the State of Illinois and the United States and |
21 |
| see for themselves how this epidemic of prescription drug abuse |
22 |
| is killing children; therefore, be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |

| NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
3 |
| support the goals and ideas of the DEA Educational Foundation |
4 |
| and the Save A Star Drug Awareness Foundation's Rx Factor |
5 |
| Traveling Exhibit; and be it further
|
6 |
| RESOLVED, That we encourage children and teens to live |
7 |
| drug-free lives; and be it further |
8 |
| RESOLVED, That we encourage the people of the United States |
9 |
| to promote the creation of drug-free communities and to |
10 |
| participate in drug prevention activities to show support for |
11 |
| healthy, productive, and drug-free lifestyles; and be it |
12 |
| further |
13 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
14 |
| presented to the Save A Star Drug Awareness Foundation as a |
15 |
| symbol of our respect.
