| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 |
| Representatives are pleased to congratulate the residents of |
4 |
| the City of Palos Hills on the occasion of the city's 50th |
5 |
| anniversary; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, Melanchan Powell, one of the earliest settlers and |
7 |
| first postmaster of Palos, suggested the name Palos, the |
8 |
| namesake of Palos de Frontera, the port across the sea from |
9 |
| whose harbor the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria sailed |
10 |
| from on its voyage of discovery; and
|
11 |
| WHEREAS, The first mayor of Palos Hills was elected on |
12 |
| October 25, 1958 in response to the encroaching surrounding |
13 |
| neighborhoods that threatened to break apart the area known as |
14 |
| North Palos; and
|
15 |
| WHEREAS, In 1962, the city's first four-year public high |
16 |
| school, the Amos Alonzo Stagg High School, was founded; the |
17 |
| school has prospered since its founding; and
|
18 |
| WHEREAS, In 1967, the second largest community college in |
19 |
| the State, Moraine Valley, was founded, which included |
20 |
| approximately 294 acres of property; and
|
|

| WHEREAS, Gerald R. Bennett, the mayor of Palos Hills since |
2 |
| 1981, began a new city administration in the early 1980s, |
3 |
| improving roadways, drainage, sidewalks, lighting projects on |
4 |
| the city's main streets, and neighborhood streets; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, The Palos Hills Golf Club, designed by David |
6 |
| Arthur Gil and built by Bradlink Inc., was constructed in 1990; |
7 |
| the course was ranked one of the State's top new public courses |
8 |
| in the 1990's; and
|
9 |
| WHEREAS, In 1994, a new City Hall at 10335 South Roberts |
10 |
| Road was dedicated, which houses the departments of |
11 |
| Administration, Sewer & Water, Building and Licensing, |
12 |
| Community Resources, and the city's Ordinance/Animal Control |
13 |
| Officer; and |
14 |
| WHEREAS, The 2000 census counted the population of Palos |
15 |
| Hills at 17,665 people, made up of a melting pot of many |
16 |
| cultures, including Irish, Polish, German, Italian, and Greek; |
17 |
| therefore, be it
|

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
19 |
| NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
20 |
| congratulate the residents of the City of Palos Hills on the |
21 |
| occasion of the city's 50th anniversary and wish them continued |
22 |
| success and happiness in the future; and be it further
