2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of
Dr. | ||||||
4 | Charles Runner of Chicago, who passed away on June 9, 2008; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Dr. Charles Runner was born on March 25, 1918 in | ||||||
6 | Washington D.C.; he and his wife, Dorothy, were married in 1945 | ||||||
7 | in the Thorndyke Hilton Chapel at the University of Chicago | ||||||
8 | campus by civil rights leader and former Howard University | ||||||
9 | theology professor Reverend Howard W. Thurman; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Dr. Charles Runner received his undergraduate and | ||||||
11 | medical degrees from Howard University and Howard Medical | ||||||
12 | School in Washington D.C.; he performed his pediatric residency | ||||||
13 | at Provident Hospital in Chicago; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, After serving in a United States Army hospital in | ||||||
15 | Munich, Germany during the Korean War, Dr. Charles Runner | ||||||
16 | returned to Chicago and set up a practice in 1955 on Chicago's | ||||||
17 | South Side; Dr. Runner faithfully served the citizens of the | ||||||
18 | South Side as a pediatrician for over 50 years until his | ||||||
19 | retirement in 2001; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Dr. Charles Runner's medical practice was well | ||||||
21 | known for its personal approach to medicine, with Dr. Runner |

1 | intimately knowing the personal medical histories of the many | ||||||
2 | families who came to his office generation after generation; | ||||||
3 | his caring attitude and great knowledge of medicine will be | ||||||
4 | greatly missed by his many adoring patients; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, As a testament to his love for his fellow man, Dr. | ||||||
6 | Charles Runner was named one of the first five recipients of | ||||||
7 | the Martin Luther King Legacy Awards, a prestigious award given | ||||||
8 | for community service by the Boys and Girls Club of Chicago, in | ||||||
9 | 1989; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Dr. Charles Runner enjoyed opera and jazz and was | ||||||
11 | a past board member of the Lyric Opera; he was also an avid | ||||||
12 | photographer, enjoying the hobby well into his retirement; and | ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Dr. Charles Runner is survived by his wife, | ||||||
14 | Dorothy; his daughters, Susan Runner and Shari Carnegie; and | ||||||
15 | his four grandchildren; therefore, be it
| ||||||
16 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
17 | NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
18 | mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Dr. | ||||||
19 | Charles Runner; and be it further
| ||||||
20 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
21 | presented to the family of Dr. Charles Runner as an expression |
