| WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel John W. Amberg II entered the |
3 |
| United States Army in 1982 and completed basic training at Fort |
4 |
| Knox earning the Military Occupational Skill, 19D, Cavalry |
5 |
| Scout; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel John Amberg holds a Bachelor's |
7 |
| degree in Leadership from the United States Military Academy at |
8 |
| West Point and a Master's degree in Business Administration |
9 |
| from Eastern New Mexico University; and
|
10 |
| WHEREAS, He is a graduate of the Command and General Staff |
11 |
| College, the Public Affairs Officer's Course, the Combined Arms |
12 |
| Services Staff School, the Field Artillery Basic and Advanced |
13 |
| Courses, and holds the Airborne Badge; and
|
14 |
| WHEREAS, Serving as an Artillery Officer, Lieutenant |
15 |
| Colonel Amberg was stationed at Fort Hood (1995) and |
16 |
| participated in an operational deployment to Kuwait; he also |
17 |
| served as the deputy operations officer for the Artillery |
18 |
| Battalion and was deployed to fight forest fires in Idaho and |
19 |
| Montana in support of the United States Forest Service; and
|
20 |
| WHEREAS, Prior to his assignment at Fort Hood, Lieutenant |
21 |
| Colonel Amberg served as a Gunnery Instructor for the Officer |
|

| Basic Course at the Artillery School, Fort Sill, Oklahoma; and
|
2 |
| WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Amberg also was deployed to |
3 |
| Desert Shield/Desert Storm (1991) from Neu Ulm, Germany as part |
4 |
| of the 1st Infantry Division and VII Corps, the largest |
5 |
| overseas theater-to-theater deployment in the history of the |
6 |
| Army; and |
7 |
| WHEREAS, From 1997 to 2000 Lieutenant Colonel Amberg taught |
8 |
| Military Leadership at the Reserve Officer Training Course |
9 |
| (ROTC), New Mexico Military Institute at Roswell, New Mexico, |
10 |
| and assisted the University in commissioning over 150 officers, |
11 |
| the second largest commissioning source for United States Army |
12 |
| officers, other than West Point; and |
13 |
| WHEREAS, In 2001, Lieutenant Colonel Amberg attended the |
14 |
| Command and General Staff College and then was assigned to the |
15 |
| United States Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC), |
16 |
| Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where he served as the Secretary of |
17 |
| the General Staff (SGS), and was responsible for the management |
18 |
| of all administrative records for the students and staff for |
19 |
| the Deputy Commandant; and
|
20 |
| WHEREAS, From January 2003 to March 2003, Lieutenant |
21 |
| Colonel Amberg was deployed to Zamboanga City, Republic of the |
22 |
| Philippines, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom; during |
|

| the deployment, Lieutenant Colonel Amberg served as the |
2 |
| principle PAO for the Joint Special Operation Task Force |
3 |
| Philippines as they conducted humanitarian assistance and |
4 |
| military training missions; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, He was the Chief of Public Affairs for the United |
6 |
| States Army Japan/9th Theater Support Command at Camp Zama, |
7 |
| Japan; Lieutenant Colonel Amberg served as the principle PAO |
8 |
| for the 2004 military desertion trial of the former Korean War |
9 |
| Army Sergeant Charles Jenkins; Lieutenant Colonel Amberg, |
10 |
| serving as the Army spokesperson, assured that the public |
11 |
| understood the military trial was merely the United States Army |
12 |
| enforcing the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) with one |
13 |
| of its own; the case was internationally significant due to the |
14 |
| personal interest of Japan's Prime Minister, Jerinichi |
15 |
| Koizumi; and
|
16 |
| WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Amberg arrived in Chicago in |
17 |
| July of 2005 and participated in the Army's Training with |
18 |
| Industry Program and has now retired as Midwest Director, |
19 |
| United States Army Public Affairs, after serving 26 years in |
20 |
| the military; and
|
21 |
| WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Amberg played an instrumental |
22 |
| role as a liaison between the United States Army and an array |
23 |
| of non-profit charitable organizations dedicated to serving |
|

| both veteran and current members of the United States military |
2 |
| in and around the Midwest area, and was vital in providing |
3 |
| guidance to these organizations; and
|
4 |
| WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Amberg was central to the |
5 |
| successful re-launch of the Purple Heart Cruise, a Chicago |
6 |
| institution dedicated to serving the veterans of Illinois and |
7 |
| America and provided assistance, advice, and council to the |
8 |
| leadership of the hosting organization, Kup's Purple Heart |
9 |
| Foundation; and
|
10 |
| WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Amberg will officially retire |
11 |
| from the military on September 2008; therefore, be it
|
12 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
13 |
| NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
14 |
| congratulate and recognize Lieutenant Colonel John Amberg for |
15 |
| his dedication to the citizens of Illinois, for having |
16 |
| accomplished all missions tasked to him and his respective |
17 |
| units, and for having served this State and the nation |
18 |
| honorably for 26 years and that we declare September 30, 2008 |
19 |
| as Lieutenant Colonel John Amberg Day in the State of Illinois; |
20 |
| and be it further
|

| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
22 |
| presented to Lieutenant Colonel John Amberg as a symbol of our |
