2 | WHEREAS, The Eta Psi Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma | ||||||
3 | Fraternity, Incorporated, is sponsoring its first legislative | ||||||
4 | visit to the State Capitol; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, The Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at | ||||||
6 | Howard University in Washington, D.C., on January 9, 1914, by | ||||||
7 | three young, African-American male students, celebrated as the | ||||||
8 | Honorable A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and | ||||||
9 | the Honorable Charles I. Brown; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., an international | ||||||
11 | organization comprised of 150,000 college-educated men, | ||||||
12 | focuses on issues that impact youth and our communities; and | ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, From its inception, the Founders conceived Phi | ||||||
14 | Beta Sigma as a mechanism to deliver services to the general | ||||||
15 | community, rather than gaining skills to be utilized | ||||||
16 | exclusively for themselves or their immediate families; this | ||||||
17 | deep conviction is mirrored in the Fraternity's motto, "Culture | ||||||
18 | For Service and Service for Humanity"; and | ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma is the only historically | ||||||
20 | African-American fraternity to be constitutionally bound to a | ||||||
21 | sorority, enjoying and fostering a mutually supportive |

1 | relationship with the women of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.; | ||||||
2 | and | ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma has from its very beginning | ||||||
4 | concerned itself with improving the general well-being of | ||||||
5 | minority groups and demonstrates this through partnerships | ||||||
6 | with the March of Dimes, the American Cancer Society, the | ||||||
7 | Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund, the National Marrow Donor | ||||||
8 | Program, American Diabetes Research, and St. Jude's Children | ||||||
9 | Research Hospital; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, The Phi Beta Sigma programs of Bigger and Better | ||||||
11 | Business, Education and Social Action are realized through the | ||||||
12 | Fraternity's overarching program, Sigma Wellness; and | ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Key officers today include: Paul L. Griffin, Jr., | ||||||
14 | International President; Lezell Lowe, Great Lakes Regional | ||||||
15 | Director; and Quincy Rosenborough, Illinois State Director; | ||||||
16 | therefore, be it

17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
18 | NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
19 | the members of this Body, in recognition of the achievements of | ||||||
20 | the members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and the values | ||||||
21 | for which they strive, do proclaim Wednesday, May, 21, 2008 as | ||||||
22 | the First Phi Beta Sigma Day throughout the State of Illinois; |

2 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
3 | presented to the International President of Phi Beta Sigma | ||||||
