HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, During World War II, volunteer aviators of the
3 Civil Air Patrol's (CAP) Coastal Patrol distinguished
4 themselves valiantly, flying more than 24 million miles during
5 86,000 overwater missions, a total of 244,600 flight hours, to
6 help win the battle against U-boats that were preying on
7 coastal shipping; and
 
8     WHEREAS, CAP volunteers spotted 173 subs, attacked 57, hit
9 10, and sank two; called in to aid 91 ships in distress; saved
10 363 survivors of sub attacks, discovered 17 floating mines, and
11 flew 5,684 special convoy missions; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Inspired by the highest sense of patriotism and
13 pride in their mission, 59 members of these courageous aircrews
14 died, 26 were lost at sea, and seven others were seriously
15 injured; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Today CAP continues this tradition of service
17 before self as one of the most unique volunteer organizations
18 in America, consisting of everyday heroes, from pilots,
19 teachers, and youth mentors to technology experts,
20 communicators, chaplains, and more; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Whether performing search and rescue missions or

1 helping communities recover from floods, wildfires, tornadoes,
2 or hurricanes, CAP members are there to aid their nation; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Coming full circle from its beginnings in World
4 War II, Civil Air Patrol is again performing homeland security
5 missions, assisting the Air Force in ensuring the skies above
6 our nation are safe by flying target-intercept training
7 missions for U.S. military pilots; and
 
8     WHEREAS, With 550 aircraft and thousands of trained aircrew
9 members, CAP is a tremendous force multiplier for the Air Force
10 and other federal, state, and local agencies; and
 
11     WHEREAS, CAP also provides exceptional growth
12 opportunities to 22,000 youth in Cadet Programs, which stress
13 leadership and character development and teach aviation and
14 emergency response skills; and
 
15     WHEREAS, CAP's Aerospace Education, School Enrichment, and
16 Drug Demand Reduction programs touch thousands of educators,
17 over 22,000 cadets, and thousands of other youth in classrooms
18 across America by conveying important aerospace concepts while
19 increasing students' physical fitness and teaching the value of
20 a drug-free lifestyle; and
 
21     WHEREAS, CAP's Missions for America impact the lives of

1 thousands of Americans each year and CAP is credited with
2 saving an average of 80 lives annually, assisting our nation's
3 law enforcement agencies with taking millions of dollars in
4 drugs off our nation's streets; therefore, be it
 
5     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
7 commend the 60th anniversary of the signing of Public Law 557,
8 which made the Civil Air Patrol the official auxiliary of the
9 United States Air Force; and be it further
 
10     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11 presented to a representative of the Civil Air Patrol as a
12 symbol of our respect.
