| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are pleased to honor the Sons of the American | ||||||
4 | Legion Detachment of Illinois on their contributions and | ||||||
5 | commitment to others; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, The Detachment of Illinois is the fourth largest | ||||||
7 | Detachment in the Central Region which includes Iowa, Ohio, | ||||||
8 | Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Missouri, and Indiana; | ||||||
9 | currently the Detachment ranks second in membership renewal; | ||||||
10 | and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS,
The Detachment routinely contributes thousands of | ||||||
12 | dollars to the Veterans and Children's programs within the | ||||||
13 | American Legion; in 2008, with significant help from the Sons | ||||||
14 | of the American Legion, the Legion Family has donated in excess | ||||||
15 | of $20,000 to The Haven, a day lodge designed and operated for | ||||||
16 | the purpose of providing a place for relaxation and | ||||||
17 | recuperation for the hospitalized veterans located in the | ||||||
18 | Marion VA Medical Center; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, The total number of hours dedicated to community | ||||||
20 | service and especially the scouting programs are astounding; | ||||||
21 | membership is climbing throughout the State; there are 1,700 | ||||||
22 | new members this year and the Detachment is striving to meet |

| |||||||
1 | the National Goal of 14,547, based on last year's membership | ||||||
2 | totals; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Nationally, the Sons of the American Legion donate | ||||||
4 | almost three times more to Children's Programs than the rest of | ||||||
5 | the Legion Family combined; the Detachment was integral in | ||||||
6 | establishing the Toby Tire School Bus Safety Program within the | ||||||
7 | State of Illinois, a model which is being closely viewed by | ||||||
8 | other states within the region; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, The Detachment Commander routinely travels more | ||||||
10 | than 30,000 miles during his tenure; his travels include | ||||||
11 | National Headquarters for training, and visiting the more than | ||||||
12 | 240 Squadrons located throughout Illinois; he routinely spends | ||||||
13 | in excess of $14,000 out of his own pocket to accomplish his | ||||||
14 | tasks; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, The rolls of Sons membership includes all walks of | ||||||
16 | life from the newborns of veterans to the President of the | ||||||
17 | United States; all members are equal and have equal voice in | ||||||
18 | the organization, with the only difference being at which level | ||||||
19 | you are serving and what responsibilities the positions entail; | ||||||
20 | therefore, be it

21 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
22 | NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |

1 | honor the Sons of the American Legion Detachment of Illinois | ||||||
2 | and commend them for their work on behalf of the people of the | ||||||
3 | State of Illinois; and be it further
| ||||||
4 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
5 | presented to the Sons of the American Legion Detachment of | ||||||
6 | Illinois as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
