2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate Roger Matile on the | ||||||
4 | occasion of his retirement as editor of the Ledger-Sentinel in | ||||||
5 | Oswego; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Roger Matile is a native of Wheatland Township in | ||||||
7 | northwest Will County; he moved with his family to Oswego in | ||||||
8 | 1954; he graduated from Oswego High School in 1964 and attended | ||||||
9 | Northern Illinois University; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Roger Matile's love for writing began in 1976, | ||||||
11 | when he and his wife, Sue, were members of the Kendall County | ||||||
12 | Bicentennial Commission; together, they helped produce "A | ||||||
13 | Bicentennial History of Kendall County, Illinois", as well as | ||||||
14 | monographs including "Indians of Kendall County" and "A | ||||||
15 | Students' History of Kendall County"; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Roger Matile began his journalism career as a | ||||||
17 | local history columnist for the Fox Valley Sentinel in 1977; | ||||||
18 | soon after he began working, he accepted additional work as a | ||||||
19 | reporter for the Sentinel, covering several local governmental | ||||||
20 | agencies, including the Montgomery Village Board, the West | ||||||
21 | Aurora School Board, the Oswego School Board, and the Kane | ||||||
22 | County Board; and

1 | WHEREAS, Roger Matile served as editor of the | ||||||
2 | Ledger-Sentinel since 1980, when the competing Oswego Ledger | ||||||
3 | and Fox Valley Sentinel newspapers were merged into a single | ||||||
4 | entity by the owner, the Kendall County Record Newspapers; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Roger Matile was a driving force in the growth of | ||||||
6 | the Ledger-Sentinel from a 2,000 circulation, 20-page | ||||||
7 | newspaper in 1980 to its current circulation of more than 8,300 | ||||||
8 | with an average of more than 80 pages each week; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, During Roger Matile's 28 years as editor, the | ||||||
10 | Ledger-Sentinel was the recipient of more than 300 awards in | ||||||
11 | annual newspaper contests sponsored by the Illinois Press | ||||||
12 | Association and the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association; | ||||||
13 | he won many of those awards himself for news articles, | ||||||
14 | editorials, columns, photography, and graphics, including | ||||||
15 | multiple IPA awards for Best Coverage of Taxation Issues and | ||||||
16 | Best School Board Coverage in Illinois; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Despite retiring from the Ledger-Sentinel, Roger | ||||||
18 | Matile will continue writing his weekly 'Reflections' column on | ||||||
19 | local history for the Ledger-Sentinel's Opinion page; | ||||||
20 | therefore, be it

21 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |

1 | NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
2 | congratulate Roger Matile on the occasion of his retirement and | ||||||
3 | wish him many happy and healthy retirement years; and be it | ||||||
4 | further

5 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
6 | presented to Roger Matile as a symbol of our esteem and | ||||||
7 | respect.
