| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 |
| Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. J. Kamala |
4 |
| Buckner on the occasion of being the recipient of the African |
5 |
| American Lifetime Achievement Award from the Knights of Peter |
6 |
| Claver and Ladies Auxiliary Frank Houston Council 251; and
|
7 |
| WHEREAS, The African American Lifetime Achievement Award |
8 |
| celebrates educators, civic leaders, and community activists |
9 |
| who dedicate themselves to a lifetime of service to their |
10 |
| communities; and
|
11 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. J. Kamala Buckner graduated from Thornton |
12 |
| Township High School in 1968; she earned her bachelor's degree |
13 |
| in education-speech/theatre in 1972 from Indiana University in |
14 |
| Bloomington, Indiana and her master's degree in political |
15 |
| science from Indiana University in 1973; she earned her |
16 |
| doctorate of philosophy with a major in educational leadership |
17 |
| and leadership studies from Loyola University; and
|
18 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. J. Kamala Buckner has had a long and |
19 |
| distinguished career in education; she began her career as a |
20 |
| part-time instructor at South Suburban College in South |
21 |
| Holland, serving there from September of 1974 until 1976; in |
22 |
| September of 1973, she began working as a teacher at Thornridge |

| High School in Dolton and Thornton High School in Harvey; in |

| September of 1978, she became Assistant Chapter 1 Director of |
3 |
| Thornton Township High School District #205 in Harvey, serving |
4 |
| there until November of 1983, when she became District Chapter |
5 |
| 1 Director of School District #205; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, In January of 1986, Dr. J. Kamala Buckner became |
7 |
| the District Director of Student Services for Thornton Township |
8 |
| High School District #205, serving there until September of |
9 |
| 1991, when she was made the District Director of Pupil |
10 |
| Personnel Services of the district; she served as District |
11 |
| Director until September of 1994, when she became the Assistant |
12 |
| Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services and External |
13 |
| Funding; and
|
14 |
| WHEREAS, In 1999, Dr. J. Kamala Buckner was named to serve |
15 |
| as Superintendent of Thornton Township High School District |
16 |
| #205, a position that she has served in admirably; and
|
17 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. J. Kamala Buckner is the owner and coordinator |
18 |
| of KAMEYA, Incorporated, a consulting firm established in 1983 |
19 |
| which provides consultation for planning special occasions, |
20 |
| entertainment events, and motivational seminars; and
|
21 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. J. Kamala Buckner is a member of many |
22 |
| prestigious organizations, including the National Association |
|

| of Secondary School Principals, the Illinois Principals |

| Association, the International Reading Association, |
3 |
| Supervision and Curriculum Developments, the American |

| Association of School Administrators, the American Association |

| of Curriculum Development, Phi Delta Kappa, the Children's |
6 |
| Defense Fund, the Urban League, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc., the |
7 |
| NAACP, and LINKS, Inc.; and |
8 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. J. Kamala Buckner's dedication to her |
9 |
| profession and her willingness to serve her community make her |
10 |
| a model for the people of the State of Illinois; therefore, be |
11 |
| it

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
13 |
| NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
14 |
| congratulate Dr. J. Kamala Buckner on the occasion of being the |
15 |
| recipient of the African American Lifetime Achievement Award |
16 |
| and wish her continued success and happiness in the future; and |
17 |
| be it further

| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
19 |
| presented to Dr. J. Kamala Buckner as a symbol of our esteem |
20 |
| and respect.
