HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The scientists in the cutting-edge laboratories 
3
of America's pharmaceutical research companies create most of 
4
the world's new medicines, which benefit tens of millions of 
5
patients; and

 
6
    WHEREAS, Due to their efforts, more than 2,500 medicines 
7
are in development today to give patients more and better 
8
therapeutic options; and

 
9
    WHEREAS, These potential new treatments include 
10
pharmaceuticals for cancer, Alzheimer's disease, infectious 
11
diseases, heart disease, arthritis, stroke, diabetes, obesity, 
12
hypertension, HIV/AIDS, and many other life-threatening 
13
diseases and medical conditions; and

 
14
    WHEREAS, The men and women who discover and create these 
15
medicines deserve recognition for their life-saving and 
16
life-enhancing accomplishments; and


 
17
    WHEREAS, Recipients of the Pharmaceutical Research and 
18
Manufacturers of America's Discoverers Award over the 
19
program's 20 years have included the creators of vital new 
20
medicines for life-threatening infections, chronic myeloid 
21
leukemia, rheumatoid arthritis, AIDS, preventing rejections of

life-saving transplants, and lowering cholesterol; therefore,

    RESOLVED, BY THE  HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
4
NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
5
applaud the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of 
6
America (PhRMA) on the 20th anniversary of its Discoverers 
7
Award program, which each year honors scientists whose tireless 
8
research and development of new pharmaceuticals have greatly 
9
benefited patients all over the world.
