HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives are pleased to congratulate Mrs. Helen Dumas of 
4
Mt. Vernon on the occasion of her 100th birthday; and

 
5
    WHEREAS, She was born on February 24, 1908 in Grenada, 
6
Mississippi to Robert and Ophelia (Patterson) Edwards; she was 
7
one of fourteen children born to this union; and

 
8
    WHEREAS, She quit school at an early age to help her 
9
parents with the crops; after moving to St. Louis in the 1930s, 
10
she began attending an adult education program and later 
11
received a cosmetology license; she worked in St. Louis for ten 
12
years before moving to Mt. Vernon, where she retired in 1978; 
13
and

 
14
    WHEREAS, She is a devoted member of the Church of God in 
15
Christ and loves to attend Bible School; and

 

16
    WHEREAS, She is a member of the Jefferson County 
17
African-American Heritage Committee and faithfully attends all 
18
the meetings; therefore, be it

    RESOLVED, BY THE  HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
20
NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we

truly a blessing and an example to the people

of the State of
Illinois of a life well-lived; and be it
