HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Vermilion County Health Department public health administrator Steven Laker on the occasion of winning the 2007 Milton and Ruth Roemer Prize for Creative Local Public Health Work from the American Public Health Association; and

WHEREAS, The Milton and Ruth Roemer Prize for Creative Local Public Health Work is awarded to a local health officer who "has demonstrated exceptionally creative work in the field of public health"; and

WHEREAS, Steven Laker has had a long and distinguished career in public health; he started his career with the Vermilion County Health Department in 1971; he became an administrator in the department in 1982; and

WHEREAS, Steven Laker has been active with numerous public health organizations; he has served on the Illinois Terrorism Task Force since June 2001; he is a member of the Illinois Department of Public Health's Immunization Advisory Committee and has been a member of the Local Health Liaison Committee for over 20 years; he is a past president of the Illinois Association of Public Health, a position he plans to resume in January of 2009; and

WHEREAS, Steven Laker was instrumental in the creation of the Illinois Public Health Mutual Aid System, a program that connects local public health departments with neighbors around the state during an emergency; and

WHEREAS, Steven Laker's dedication to the cause of public health makes him a model for the people of the State of Illinois; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Steven Laker for winning the 2007 Milton and Ruth Roemer Prize for Creative Local Public Health Work and wish him continued success and happiness in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Steven Laker as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
