HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate the congregation
4 of the Galena United Methodist Church on the occasion of the
5 church's 175th anniversary; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The first congregation of the Galena United
7 Methodist Church was organized in 1829 and consisted of only
8 six members; the congregation held services in a house on Bench
9 Street in Galena until 1832, when the members began
10 construction of a new church; the first church burned to the
11 ground in January 1838 and was immediately replaced with a new
12 stone and brick building, which was dedicated in 1841; the
13 first parsonage still remains on the hillside of the church's
14 lot and is known as the Osprey's Nest; the church's current
15 building was built in 1856 and was dedicated in January 1857;
16 and
 
17     WHEREAS, The Galena United Methodist Church contains many
18 beautiful stained glass windows and a Moline Pipe Organ, which
19 were installed in 1868; and
 
20     WHEREAS, The Galena United Methodist Church has served as a
21 house of worship for such famous people as Ulysses S. Grant,
22 who attended the church with his family, and the Reverend John

1 Vincent, who served the church and organized his teaching
2 classes, which became the great Chautauqua movement; and
 
3     WHEREAS, The Galena United Methodist Church will hold a
4 special anniversary service celebrating its past, present, and
5 future on September 9, 2007 at 10 A.M.; therefore, be it
 
6     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
8 congratulate the congregation of the Galena United Methodist
9 Church on the occasion of the church's 175th anniversary and
10 wish the congregation continued success and happiness in the
11 future; and be it further
 
12     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13 presented to Reverend Dan Schenck as a symbol of our esteem and
14 respect.
