2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Gordon Goodman | ||||||
4 | on the occasion of being the recipient of the Downers Grove | ||||||
5 | Citizen of the Year Award; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Dr. Gordon Goodman was born on August 19, 1933 in | ||||||
7 | Chicago and grew up in Riverside; he attended Harvard | ||||||
8 | University from 1951 to 1959, where he earned his bachelor's | ||||||
9 | degree with honors and his Ph.D.; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Dr. Gordon Goodman worked at Argonne National | ||||||
11 | Laboratory from 1959 to 1971, publishing more than twenty | ||||||
12 | contributions in chemical physics; he worked in the fields of | ||||||
13 | molecular spectroscopy and theoretical chemistry, as well as | ||||||
14 | the supervision of researchers holding Ph.D.'s and the | ||||||
15 | direction of thesis work; he taught at Harvard Summer School in | ||||||
16 | 1960 and at Cornell University in the spring of 1964; during | ||||||
17 | the fall of 1970, he developed a course entitled "Environmental | ||||||
18 | Consequences of Changes in Information Technology" at Southern | ||||||
19 | Illinois University at Edwardsville; in 1974, he was employed | ||||||
20 | at Saclay's Center for Nuclear Studies by the French Atomic | ||||||
21 | Energy Commission; and he assisted in the development of Great | ||||||
22 | Lakes Tomorrow, an international organization to improve | ||||||
23 | citizen participation in Great Lakes decisions from 1975 until |

1 | 1976; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, From 1978 to 1984, Dr. Gordon Goodman worked on | ||||||
3 | numerous problems in atomic and molecular physics, assisting in | ||||||
4 | the interpretation of experiments on photoionization and | ||||||
5 | high-resolution rotational spectra of open shell atoms and | ||||||
6 | molecules; this work was characterized by strong emphasis on | ||||||
7 | the use of symmetry properties and local density methods for | ||||||
8 | modeling electronic structures; from 1985 until his retirement | ||||||
9 | from Argonne in 1990, he worked as a part-time staff member in | ||||||
10 | Argonne's Chemistry Division; he has produced over 75 | ||||||
11 | publications in referred scientific journals, which have led to | ||||||
12 | several international collaborations, including work with | ||||||
13 | graduate and post-graduate research students in Leuven, | ||||||
14 | Belgium, where he was a visiting professor in 1987; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Dr. Gordon Goodman and his wife Nancy moved to | ||||||
16 | Downers Grove in 1962; he became involved in public affairs in | ||||||
17 | Downers Grove and DuPage County in the early 1970's, serving as | ||||||
18 | Chairman of the Mayor's Committee on Flood Plain Acquisition | ||||||
19 | from 1972 to 1973; he was a member of the Steering Committee | ||||||
20 | for the Second Total Community Development Study, TCD II from | ||||||
21 | 1992 to 1994 and co-chaired the committee's focus group | ||||||
22 | regarding Public/Cultural Facilities and Information | ||||||
23 | Technology; he has appeared and offered testimony on many | ||||||
24 | issues before most of the community's boards and commissions |

1 | spanning the last 35 years; and | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, In 1995, Dr. Gordon Goodman joined with other | ||||||
3 | citizens of Downers Grove in establishing the Pierce Downer's | ||||||
4 | Heritage Alliance to provide expert testimony at hearings about | ||||||
5 | the future land use for property at the southeast corner of | ||||||
6 | 31st Street and Highland Avenue; he served as Chair of the | ||||||
7 | Heritage Alliance from 1995 to 1998 and from 2000 to 2004 and | ||||||
8 | currently serves as its Treasurer; the group's efforts have | ||||||
9 | contributed to the public acquisition of more than 40 acres of | ||||||
10 | open space woodlands which now enhance and protect the Lyman | ||||||
11 | Woods Forest Preserve; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Dr. Gordon Goodman was an active Board Member of | ||||||
13 | the Illinois Environmental Council from 1998 to 2004 and served | ||||||
14 | as Secretary and Chair of the council's Bylaws Committee; he | ||||||
15 | has served on the DuPage County Environmental Commission and | ||||||
16 | the Downers Grove Environmental Concerns Commission; he is a | ||||||
17 | board member and secretary of the Citizen Advocacy Center in | ||||||
18 | Elmhurst, a group dedicated to "building democracy for the 21st | ||||||
19 | century"; he currently serves as a director of the Downers | ||||||
20 | Grove Concert Association, the Downers Grove Coalition for | ||||||
21 | Managed Redevelopment, and the Downers Grove Heritage | ||||||
22 | Preservation Corporation; and | ||||||
23 | WHEREAS, Dr. Gordon Goodman currently devotes much of his |

1 | time to projects which increase citizen participation in local | ||||||
2 | decision making, in the effort to achieve stable, liveable | ||||||
3 | communities with enhanced environmental quality; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Dr. Gordon Goodman's sizable contributions to | ||||||
5 | modern science and the tireless work he has performed in his | ||||||
6 | community make him a model for the citizens of this State; | ||||||
7 | therefore, be it

8 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
9 | NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
10 | congratulate Dr. Gordon Goodman on the occasion of being the | ||||||
11 | recipient of the Downers Grove Citizen of the Year Award and | ||||||
12 | wish him continued success and happiness in the future; and be | ||||||
13 | it further

14 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
15 | presented to Dr. Gordon Goodman as a symbol of our esteem and | ||||||
16 | respect.
