HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Pauline Gardiner on the occasion of celebrating her 100th birthday on August 7, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Pauline Gardiner is the eldest of 4 children; she grew up in Murphysboro and spent much of her life in the southern part of the State; she was caught in the massive tornado that hit struck Jackson County on March 18, 1925 while she was a senior in high school, where she recalled being in the school's assembly room at the time a teacher rapped on the desk to instruct the students into the hallway; and

WHEREAS, After graduating from high school in June 1927, Pauline Gardiner moved to Grand Tower, where she worked at Central Illinois Public Service; she left after three years once she married her husband, Charles; together they owned and operated a drugstore for more than 34 years; she remained in Grand Tower for 43 years, moving to Mt. Vernon in 1968 after Charles died; she later worked at a generating power plant, a factory that manufactured dynamite and powder, and a paint factory before retiring from Western Union; and

WHEREAS, Pauline Gardiner has been blessed with excellent vitality; she drove a car until she was 90; she has been at her current home since 2001; and she only takes one prescription per day; and

WHEREAS, Pauline Gardiner has one son, William; and three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Pauline Gardiner on the occasion of celebrating her 100th birthday and wish her continued good health and happiness in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Pauline Gardiner as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
