2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate Mary Ellen | ||||||
4 | Eversman for being the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni | ||||||
5 | Award, the Sisters of St. Francis Award for Distinguished | ||||||
6 | Achievement in Volunteerism; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Mary Ellen Eversman was born in Effingham in 1938; | ||||||
8 | as a young child, she adopted her mother's spirit of giving; | ||||||
9 | she always brought home children who no one else wanted to play | ||||||
10 | with; at age 10, she was spending her money on small presents | ||||||
11 | to take to the elderly in nursing homes; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Mary Ellen Eversman stepped up her efforts when | ||||||
13 | she attended Marian College in Indianapolis by studying social | ||||||
14 | work; there she played basketball, volleyball, tennis, and | ||||||
15 | swimming, while still making time to help others; she began her | ||||||
16 | career in service through two internships during college; she | ||||||
17 | worked for the American Red Cross, scanning newspapers to find | ||||||
18 | victims needing assistance, and she also worked for Catholic | ||||||
19 | Charities, accompanying social workers when they visited the | ||||||
20 | poor, the hungry, and others in need; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, After graduating from Marian College with a | ||||||
22 | Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 1960, Mary Ellen Eversman |

1 | returned to Effingham, where she began her career in social | ||||||
2 | work that spanned three decades;
she was a caseworker for a | ||||||
3 | year, then was promoted to a supervisor position, where she | ||||||
4 | worked with government agencies to find resources for other | ||||||
5 | people; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Mary Ellen Eversman continued helping others in | ||||||
7 | need after her retirement in 1991; she has ministered to | ||||||
8 | shut-ins, transported the disabled to Sunday Mass, assisted at | ||||||
9 | Sacred Heart Church in Effingham, and served as a pastoral care | ||||||
10 | volunteer at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham;
she | ||||||
11 | has recently extended her efforts beyond people to include | ||||||
12 | needy animals; she volunteers at Effingham County Humane | ||||||
13 | Society and is currently working to fund the purchase of land | ||||||
14 | and construction of a building for the Humane Society; she also | ||||||
15 | assists in fundraising for the Humane Society; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Mary Ellen Eversman also writes poems and | ||||||
17 | children's literature in her spare time; she has written many | ||||||
18 | books with the proceeds going to different causes and | ||||||
19 | organizations, including helping to fund the building drive for | ||||||
20 | the Effingham County Humane Society; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, On June 29, 2007, Mary Ellen Eversman will be | ||||||
22 | presented with a Distinguished Alumni Award, the Sisters of St. | ||||||
23 | Francis Award for Distinguished Achievement in Volunteerism in |

1 | recognition of her great deeds; therefore, be it | ||||||
2 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
3 | NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
4 | congratulate Mary Ellen Eversman for being the recipient of the | ||||||
5 | Distinguished Alumni Award, the Sisters of St. Francis Award | ||||||
6 | for Distinguished Achievement in Volunteerism, and wish her | ||||||
7 | continued success and happiness in the future; and be it | ||||||
8 | further

9 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
10 | presented to Mary Ellen Eversman as a symbol of our esteem and | ||||||
11 | respect.
