| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, Adlai Ewing Stevenson II, born on February 5, |
3 |
| 1900, was raised in Bloomington, Illinois, attended schools in |
4 |
| Bloomington and Normal, and worked at the Daily Pantagraph; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, Adlai Stevenson II served his country in numerous |
6 |
| government posts, including attendance at the 1945 San |
7 |
| Francisco Conference that founded the United Nations, his |
8 |
| election in 1948 to the office of Governor of the State of |
9 |
| Illinois, and his appointment as United States Ambassador to |
10 |
| the United Nations from 1961 until the time of his death in |
11 |
| 1965, after which he was interred in his family plot at |
12 |
| Evergreen Cemetery in Bloomington; and
|
13 |
| WHEREAS, Adlai Stevenson II was tremendously admired for |
14 |
| the eloquence with which he campaigned for the office of |
15 |
| President of the United States in 1952 and 1956, saying "Let's |
16 |
| talk sense to the American people. Let's tell them the truth, |
17 |
| that there are no gains without pains, that we are now on the |
18 |
| eve of great decisions, not easy decisions, like resistance |
19 |
| when you are attacked, but a long, patient, costly struggle |
20 |
| which alone can assure triumph over the great many enemies of |
21 |
| man - war, poverty, and tyranny - and the assaults upon human |
22 |
| dignity which are the most grievous consequences of each."; and

| WHEREAS, The following teachers and students of Oakland |

| Elementary School, in cooperation with the McLean County Museum |
3 |
| of History, studied the life of Adlai Stevenson II and |
4 |
| requested that we issue this resolution in his honor; the third |
5 |
| grade students are Joseph Clay, Jovanny Fernandez, Grant |
6 |
| Guttschow, Seth Harris, Sydney Hendricks, Anna Holloway, |
7 |
| Snehal Kadam, Alex Kizer, Grant Koch, Jacob Oller, Adam Swords, |
8 |
| and their teacher, Janenne Scott; and
|
9 |
| WHEREAS, The fourth grade students are Alex Alexander, |
10 |
| Richard Burgauer, Jenna Cicci, Justin Corry, Kendall DeBoer, |
11 |
| Carol Gu, Elizabeth Hebert, Miranda Henson, Julia Irwin, Anissa |
12 |
| Ortiz, Caleb Sorensen, Curtis Wiese, and their teacher, Shari |
13 |
| Cooper; and
|
14 |
| WHEREAS, The fifth grade students are Guilianno Barlow, |
15 |
| James Clay, Dustin Debart, Scott Dillman, Patrick Fitzgerald, |
16 |
| Abby Gros, Elizabeth Lindenmeier, Kyle O'Daniel, David Pelo, |
17 |
| Lindsay Summers, Dallas Thornton, Cassie Tuggle, and their |
18 |
| teacher, Leslie Frizzell; and |
19 |
| WHEREAS, The McLean County Museum of History members are |
20 |
| Executive Director Greg Koos; Director of Education Laura |
21 |
| Wheaton; and Bloomington Alderman Michael G. Matejka, Member of |
22 |
| the Board; therefore, be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |

| NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |

| February 5, 2008 and every February 5 thereafter be designated |
4 |
| Adlai Stevenson Day in the State of Illinois; and be it further
|
5 |
| RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be |
6 |
| presented to McLean County Museum of History Executive Director |
7 |
| Greg Koos, and Oakland Elementary School teachers Janenne |
8 |
| Scott, Shari Cooper, and Leslie Frizzell.
