| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 |
| Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of
Angela |
4 |
| Perez Miller of Chicago, who passed away on May 26, 2007; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, Angela Perez Miller's family came to Chicago in |
6 |
| the 1920s from Mexico; her parents were the late Jesse and |
7 |
| Emilia Perez; and
|
8 |
| WHEREAS, Angela Perez Miller attended the University of |
9 |
| Illinois at Chicago, where she acquired two master's degrees |
10 |
| and a Ph.D in public policy analysis; she was a former Chicago |
11 |
| public school elementary school teacher and administrator; her |
12 |
| last job with the district was director of staff training and |
13 |
| development in the Department of Special Education; as an |
14 |
| educator, she focused much of her professional life pushing for |
15 |
| bilingual education and helping Hispanic children, |
16 |
| specifically those with special education needs; after her |
17 |
| departure from the Chicago public schools she taught bilingual |
18 |
| education and educational policy at DePaul University and the |
19 |
| University of Illinois at Chicago; and
|
20 |
| WHEREAS, Angela Perez Miller was a past board president of |
21 |
| the Latino Institute, a civil rights think tank that addressed |
22 |
| Latino concerns in Chicago; at one time, it was noted as one of |
|
|

| the largest and most influential Hispanic think tanks in |
2 |
| Chicago; she was a member of Senator Miguel Del Valle's |
3 |
| education committee and a founding member of the Alivio Medical |
4 |
| Center, which opened in 1989 to provide access to primary |
5 |
| health care services to predominately Latino communities; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, Angela Perez Miller was an avid traveler and opera |
7 |
| lover; she frequently traveled to Mexico and other places with |
8 |
| her girlfriends, a group of Latina women who called themselves |
9 |
| "Las Viejas", a term used to refer to respected female elders; |
10 |
| and |
11 |
| WHEREAS, Angela Perez Miller will be remembered by all who |
12 |
| knew her as a passionate, compassionate, and fearless woman who |
13 |
| focused herself fully on the success of Latino schoolchildren |
14 |
| in the city of Chicago; and
|
15 |
| WHEREAS, Angela Perez Miller was the loving mother of Dion |
16 |
| Miller (Susan Mullen) Perez; the proud grandmother of Donovan, |
17 |
| Manuel, and Antonio; and the dear cousin of the late Manuel |
18 |
| Perez Jr.; therefore, be it
|

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
20 |
| NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
21 |
| mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Angela |
22 |
| Perez Miller; and be it further
