| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, George E. Sangmeister was born in Frankfort in |
3 |
| 1931; he served as Will County States Attorney and later served |
4 |
| in both the Illinois House of Representatives and the Illinois |
5 |
| Senate; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, George Sangmeister was elected to Congress in |
7 |
| November of 1988, and was re-elected to the House in 1990 and |
8 |
| again in 1992, retiring in January of 1995; while in Congress, |
9 |
| he served on three House Committees: Public Works and |
10 |
| Transportation, Veteran's Affairs, and Judiciary; and
|
11 |
| WHEREAS, In more than 30 years of public service, George E. |
12 |
| Sangmeister has held office in every branch of government; he |
13 |
| began his public career as a Justice of the Peace and |
14 |
| Magistrate of the Circuit Court of Will County in 1961; from |
15 |
| 1964-68, he served as State's Attorney In Will County; he was |
16 |
| elected in 1972 to the Illinois House of Representatives for |
17 |
| two terms and returned to Springfield as Illinois Senator from |
18 |
| 1976 to 1987; in the Senate he served as both chairman of the |
19 |
| Senate Judiciary Committee and the chairman of the Senate |
20 |
| Executive Committee; he was named one of the "Top Ten |
21 |
| Legislators" in a 1985 poll conducted by the Chicago Sun-Times; |

| and
|

| WHEREAS, George E. Sangmeister is a member of many civic |
2 |
| organizations: the Frankfort Unit of the American Cancer |
3 |
| Society; the Silver Cross Hospital Foundation Board; the |
4 |
| American Legion; and the Frankfort Lions Club and is a member |
5 |
| and former Chairman of the Support Committee for the Abraham |
6 |
| Lincoln National Cemetery; he served as a member of the |
7 |
| Lincoln-Way High School District 210 Board of Education from |
8 |
| September 1970 through April 1973; he is a former member of the |
9 |
| Board of Directors of Joliet Junior College Foundation; he |
10 |
| served as Chairman of the Housing Foundation of Will County, |
11 |
| serving the homeless and those in need of affordable housing; |
12 |
| and
|
13 |
| WHEREAS, George E. Sangmeister chaired the committee that |
14 |
| planned the transfer of the Joliet Arsenal from military to |
15 |
| civilian use; he personally designated the committee to |
16 |
| allocate almost 1,000 acres as the site for the now established |
17 |
| Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery; and
|
18 |
| WHEREAS, George E. Sangmeister is married to Doris |
19 |
| (Hinspeter) Sangmeister and is the father of Kurt and Kimberly |
20 |
| and the grandfather of Jordan, Cole, Keegan, and Kinzie; and |
21 |
| WHEREAS, A sculpture will be dedicated on May 26, 2007 at |
22 |
| the Frankfort Founders Center to George E. Sangmeister for his |
23 |
| hard work and devotion to the Village of Frankfort, the County |

| of Will, and the State of Illinois; therefore, be it
|

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
3 |
| NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
4 |
| honor the life of George E. Sangmeister and acknowledge the |
5 |
| legacy and history of this important person in the life of |
6 |
| Frankfort; and be it further
|
7 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
8 |
| presented to George E. Sangmeister and the Village of Frankfort |
9 |
| as a symbol of our respect.
