| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 |
| Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Ann |
4 |
| Colette Scanu, who passed away on February 24, 2007; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, Ann Colette Scanu, nee Wahl, was born on September |
6 |
| 2nd, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio; she was the first born child of |
7 |
| Dr. William and Coletta Schertzer Wahl; she graduated from
|
8 |
| Sacred Heart Academy High School in 1945, and then began her |
9 |
| studies at Ursuline College, where she earned her Bachelor of |
10 |
| Science degree in 1949; and
|
11 |
| WHEREAS, In 1949 Ann took a job at Cleveland Clinic where |
12 |
| she worked as a research assistant for the next decade; it was |
13 |
| here that she met Dr. Angelo Scanu, whom she married on June |
14 |
| 7th, 1958; they settled in Hyde Park, where they raised their |
15 |
| two children, Gabriella and Marco; and
|
16 |
| WHEREAS, In 1971, Ann began working as a part time tutor at |
17 |
| St. Thomas the Apostle School and within a few years the |
18 |
| position became full-time; at the time of her retirement in the |
19 |
| spring of 2004, Ann had been a member of the faculty at St. |
20 |
| Thomas for over 32 years, making hers one of the longest |
21 |
| teaching careers in the history of the school; and
|

| WHEREAS, In the middle of her tenure at St. Thomas, Ann |
2 |
| Scanu went back to school, earning her Master of Education |
3 |
| degree from the University of Chicago in 1979; and |
4 |
| WHEREAS, Ann enjoyed volunteering her time to a number of |
5 |
| Chicago organizations, including the Lincoln Park Zoo and the |
6 |
| Visitors' Center at the Chicago Cultural Center; she was also a |
7 |
| familiar face at the Museum of Science and Industry, where she |
8 |
| volunteered for a quarter-century; Ann enjoyed traveling to |
9 |
| many corners of the globe, beginning with her first trip to |
10 |
| Europe in 1953; Ann visited five of the seven continents during |
11 |
| the course of the next half-century; and |
12 |
| WHEREAS, In 1984, Ann met her lifelong pen pal during a |
13 |
| visit to the town of Yeelanna, Australia, and participated in |
14 |
| no fewer than two archeological digs in England and France; Ann |
15 |
| loved the scenery, people, and culture of her husband's |
16 |
| homeland, Italy, and enjoyed many, many happy times with |
17 |
| friends and family in that beautiful country; and
|
18 |
| WHEREAS, Ann also loved a good book, a beer, a salty snack, |
19 |
| and was eager to share with the ones she loved; and |
20 |
| WHEREAS, Ann Scanu is survived by her husband, Angelo; her |
21 |
| daughter, Gabriella (Warren); her son, Marco (Jamie); her two |
22 |
| grandsons, Niccolo and Matteo; her sister, Sue; her brother, |

| Jerry (Phyllis); and her many nieces and nephews; she was |
2 |
| preceded in death by her parents and her sister and |
3 |
| brother-in-law, Sally and Ralph "Mac" McCool; therefore, be it
|
4 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
5 |
| NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
6 |
| mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Ann |
7 |
| Colette Scanu; and be it further
|
8 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
9 |
| presented to the family of Ann Colette Scanu as an expression |
10 |
| of our sympathy.
