| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the |
| 3 |
| State of Illinois wish to congratulate the Urbana Park District |
| 4 |
| on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its founding; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, The Urbana Park District is 7th oldest district in |
| 6 |
| the State of Illinois; and
|
| 7 |
| WHEREAS, In celebration of the anniversary, in October 2007 |
| 8 |
| a week-long celebration known as a Chautauqua will be |
| 9 |
| recreated; previous Chautauquas were cultural, spiritual, |
| 10 |
| political, and educational events held each year at Crystal |
| 11 |
| Lake Park in Urbana from the late 1800s to the mid 1920s; they |
| 12 |
| included such speakers as William Jennings Bryan, Helen Keller, |
| 13 |
| Jane Addams, and Booker T. Washington; and
|
| 14 |
| WHEREAS, The first Chautauqua in Champaign-Urbana was held |
| 15 |
| at West Side Park in August of 1894; it moved to Crystal Lake |
| 16 |
| Park in August of 1896 and became known as the Twin City |
| 17 |
| Chautauqua; by 1909 more than 5,000 people were attending the |
| 18 |
| Twin City Chautauqua each year; and
|
| 19 |
| WHEREAS, The citizens have chosen the theme Community |
| 20 |
| Values for the event-aiming to showcase the vibrant community |
| 21 |
| that is Urbana (and its companion (twin) city, Champaign); |
