SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to express
3 their sincere condolences to the family and friends of Leslie
4 McCollum, Jr., of Herrin, Illinois, who passed away on November
5 18, 2006; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Leslie McCollum, Jr., was born July 6, 1925, in
7 Johnston City, Illinois; his parents were Leslie and Ethel
8 (Simpson) McCollum; and
 
9     WHEREAS, He married Anne Marie Bione on November 25, 1947,
10 at the United Methodist Church in Herrin; Mr. McCollum served
11 in both the United States Army and the United States Marines
12 during World War II and the Korean War; and
 
13     WHEREAS, After being honorably discharged from the
14 service, Leslie McCollum, Jr., began 40 years of service to the
15 people and children of Southern Illinois in the field of
16 education; he worked as a teacher, counselor, coach,
17 administrator, and finally Regional Superintendent of the
18 Williamson County Schools for 12 years; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Leslie McCollum, Jr., initiated the Academic
20 Scholar Bowl in Williamson County and established the
21 Williamson County Spelling Bee; he volunteered and worked with
22 the Special Olympics and the Alternative School and initiated
23 the "Coats for Kids" program for Southern Region 6; he served
24 as co-chair for the American Cancer Society and chaired the
25 Williamson County Chapter for 25 years; and
 
26     WHEREAS, He volunteered at the Marion Veterans
27 Administration Hospital and served on the board of directors of
28 the American Heart Association; he served on the Herrin Park
29 Board and was on Senator Alan Dixon's Naval Academy Selection
30 Board; and he was an active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

1 Catholic Church in Herrin; and
 
2     WHEREAS, Leslie McCollum, Jr., is survived by his loving
3 wife, Anna Marie McCollum, and his two loving daughters, Denise
4 A. McCollum and Stephanie S. McCollum; he was preceded in death
5 by his parents, Leslie and Ethel McCollum; his stepfather,
6 Frank Schwaninger; and his two half brothers, Joe and John
7 McCollum; therefore, be it
 
8     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
9 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
10 his family and friends, the death of Leslie McCollum, Jr., and
11 extend our best thoughts at this time; and be it further
 
12     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13 presented to the family of Leslie McCollum, Jr.
