| SENATE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois |
3 |
| learned with regret of the death of J.C. Mitchell of Marion on |
4 |
| Monday, September 4, 2006; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, He was born in Marion on February 2, 1925, to |
6 |
| Everett Edward and Margaret Helen (Hartman) Mitchell; he was a |
7 |
| graduate of Marion High School in 1942; he went on to attend |
8 |
| Northwestern University in Chicago for one year; and
|
9 |
| WHEREAS, After his first year at Northwestern, he valiantly |
10 |
| served our country as a member of the U.S. Air Force during |
11 |
| WWII; he served in the European theater as a navigator of troop |
12 |
| carriers for the parachutists, flying planes trips into enemy |
13 |
| territory; he was honorably discharged with the rank of Second |
14 |
| Lieutenant; and
|
15 |
| WHEREAS, He was united in marriage to Shirley Joanne Walker |
16 |
| on August 1, 1945, in St. Louis, Missouri; together, they |
17 |
| shared more than 61 years of marriage; and
|
18 |
| WHEREAS, After his military discharge, he resumed his |
19 |
| education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale for one |
20 |
| semester; he went on to graduate from the Law School of the |
21 |
| University of Illinois Champaign in 1949; and
|
22 |
| WHEREAS, Over the years, he practiced law with Attorney |
23 |
| Gordon Franklin, Attorney Frank Roan, Attorney Tony Armstrong, |
24 |
| State Representative John Bradley, and his own son, Bruce |
25 |
| Walker Mitchell; and
|
26 |
| WHEREAS, After 55 years of practicing law, he tried to |
27 |
| semi-retire to Arizona, but law was too much a part of him; he |
28 |
| returned to Marion in January of 2005 and resumed practicing |
29 |
| with his son, Bruce; and
|
|

| WHEREAS, Attorney Mitchell was of the Methodist faith and |
2 |
| was a member of the Marion First United Methodist Church; he |
3 |
| was a member of the College of Trial Lawyers, and at the time |
4 |
| of his induction, he was the youngest lawyer ever inducted into |
5 |
| the organization; he also was a member of the Illinois Bar |
6 |
| Association, the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary |
7 |
| Commission, and the West Frankfort Country Club for 49 years; |
8 |
| he was a former member of the Marion Lions Club and the Marion |
9 |
| Elks Club B.P.O.E. No. 800, where he had served as Exalted |
10 |
| Ruler; he had also served as the attorney for the Board of the |
11 |
| Williamson County Airport Authority and the Marion Park |
12 |
| District; and
|
13 |
| WHEREAS, He had a deep love for his family and enjoyed |
14 |
| playing golf at the Franklin County Country Club with the other |
15 |
| members of "The Bolognas"; and
|
16 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of J.C. Mitchell has been deeply felt |
17 |
| by many, especially his wife, Shirley Mitchell; his daughter |
18 |
| and son-in-law, Deborah Leigh and Keith Wall, and their |
19 |
| children, Haley, Nathan, and Ethan; his son, Michael Geoffery |
20 |
| Mitchell; his brother and sister-in-law, Hartman and Marilyn |
21 |
| Mitchell; his niece, Michelle Mitchell; and his other extended |
22 |
| family members and many lifelong friends; he was preceded in |
23 |
| death by his parents; his son, Bruce Walker Mitchell on March |
24 |
| 24, 2006; his grandsons, Shawn Michael Mitchell and Tyler Keith |
25 |
| Wall; and his brother, Charles Mitchell; therefore, be it
|
26 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL |
27 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
28 |
| J.C. Mitchell, and we extend our sincere condolences to his |
29 |
| family, his friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
30 |
| further
