SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of David MacDonald Gooder of Chicago, on July 22, 2006; and

WHEREAS, He was born in Chicago in 1917; he graduated second in his class from New Trier High School; he graduated from Harvard University with a major in economic theory and then received his law degree from Northwestern Law School; he was united in marriage in 1941 to the former Elizabeth Hunter; he was a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II; and

WHEREAS, He was a longtime Downers Grove resident, moving there with his wife following the war and joining the international law firm of Lord, Bissell & Brook in 1946; he was an active member of the local community, serving on the Village Council from 1963 to 1967, the Downers Grove Library Board from 1959 to 1963, the DuPage Economic Development Council from 1983 to 1985, the executive committee of the Oak Brook Development Co. from 1964 to 1978, and was treasurer and chief financial officer of the Butler Co. from 1966 to 1981; and

WHEREAS, He had a passion for the theater, having appeared in more than 35 plays; he was proud of helping to build the Theatre of Western Springs, of which he was an active member from 1955 to 2000, and also of founding the Arts Business Council; he further supported the arts through his actions as chairman of the Advisory Council of DePaul University Theatre School and board member of the League of Chicago Theatres and the Court Theatre; he also served as president of the Illinois Community Theatre Association, the American Community Theatre Association, and the American Theatre Association during the 1970s and 1980s; and

WHEREAS, Following the passing of his wife, he married fellow attorney Jean Allard; and

WHEREAS, The passing of David MacDonald Gooder has been deeply felt by many, especially his wife, Jean; his son, David Jr.; his daughter, Wendy Sarano; his brother, Don; his sister, Adrienne Pat Richard; his grandchildren, Brooke Royse and Bard; and his great grandchildren; he was preceded in death in 1990 by his first wife, Elizabeth "Betsy"; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of David MacDonald Gooder, and we extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to his family as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
