| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois |
3 |
| learned with regret of the death of Sal L. Piazza, MD, FACS, of |
4 |
| Naperville and formerly of Chicago on Wednesday, July 19, 2006; |
5 |
| and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, He grew up in Chicago in the Roseland community, |
7 |
| and his parents were Leo Piazza of Chicago and Angelina |
8 |
| (Colletti) of Corleone, Sicily; and
|
9 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Piazza was a graduate of Fenger High School in |
10 |
| Chicago, Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, and the University |
11 |
| of Illinois Medical School; he did his first years of residency |
12 |
| in Peoria at St. Francis Hospital; and
|
13 |
| WHEREAS, He married Marilyn Domikaitis on August 20, 1955, |
14 |
| and together they shared over 50 years of marriage; and |
15 |
| WHEREAS, He went on to serve in the United States Air Force |
16 |
| as a surgeon and medical officer in the late 1950s; he held the |
17 |
| rank of captain at Laughlin Air Force Base in Texas; and
|
18 |
| WHEREAS, Following his military service, he completed his |
19 |
| surgical residency at the West Side Veterans Administration |
20 |
| Hospital, affiliated with the University of Illinois; he was |
21 |
| board-certified in general surgery and was a Fellow of the |
22 |
| American College of Surgeons; and
|
23 |
| WHEREAS, During his career, he served in many positions at |
24 |
| Edward Hospital in Naperville, including chairman of the |
25 |
| Department of Surgery, director of trauma, chief of staff, and |
26 |
| as a member of the Board of Trustees of both the hospital and |
27 |
| the hospital foundation; he was serving as a member of the |
28 |
| board of trustees at Benedictine University in Lisle and the |
29 |
| Center for Surgery in Naperville; and
|
