| SENATE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois |
3 |
| learned with regret of the death of Ray Shaw on Tuesday, June |
4 |
| 6, 2006; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Shaw was the founder of a Central Illinois |
6 |
| mini-catering empire; Shaw's Catering & Restaurant was |
7 |
| headquartered at 161 S. Jasper St. in Decatur; and
|
8 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Shaw's story was one of a rags-to-riches rise |
9 |
| in the business world; he grew up poor in a family of ten on a |
10 |
| Tennessee farm and had a job washing dishes in a Memphis hotel |
11 |
| by the age of 13; in 1950, he moved to Decatur and learned to be |
12 |
| a breakfast cook at the former Hotel Orlando; he started a |
13 |
| catering business from his garage and expanded his trade |
14 |
| steadily; and
|
15 |
| WHEREAS, He opened the Jasper Street restaurant in 1974 and |
16 |
| later added an outdoor facility called Shaw's Garden near his |
17 |
| home, while he presided over a catering business that reached |
18 |
| all over Central Illinois and beyond; in 2003, the business had |
19 |
| more than 20 employees; and
|
20 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of Ray Shaw has been deeply felt by |
21 |
| many, and he will be remembered for his strong sense of |
22 |
| compassion; therefore, be it
|
23 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL |
24 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
25 |
| Ray Shaw, and we extend our sincere condolences to his family, |
26 |
| friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
|
27 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
28 |
| presented to his family as an expression of our deepest |
29 |
| sympathy.
