| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois |
3 |
| learned with regret of the death of Doris J. Patterson on |
4 |
| Friday, September 30, 2005; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, She was born on March 23, 1938, in St. Louis, |
6 |
| Missouri, to Otto Hurley and Cora Hart; she graduated from |
7 |
| Roosevelt High School in Gary, Indiana, in 1956, with honors in |
8 |
| academics, specializing in mathematics; she was also one of the |
9 |
| top baton-twirling cheerleaders in the nation and majorette in |
10 |
| Chicago's Bud Billiken parade; and
|
11 |
| WHEREAS, During high school, she was an active member of |
12 |
| the Universal Negro Improvement Association, French Club, and |
13 |
| Girls Athletic Association; sewing was a hobby that she |
14 |
| perfected to excellence and buying material was a habit that |
15 |
| she refused to let go; in her spare time, she also enjoyed |
16 |
| reading Harlequin Romance novels; and
|
17 |
| WHEREAS, In 1957, she married Samuel McCarter, Sr., and he |
18 |
| preceded her in death; seeking to improve the quality of life |
19 |
| for her children, she moved from Missouri's Pruitt-Igo public |
20 |
| housing project to the south side of Chicago; in 1966, she |
21 |
| married Lonnie "Pat" Patterson, who also preceded her in death; |
22 |
| and
|
23 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Patterson worked at Children's Memorial |
24 |
| Hospital as a payroll supervisor for over 25 years; she retired |
25 |
| and moved to Compton, California, and worked at Ralphs Grocery |
26 |
| Company, an affiliate of The Kroger Co. grocer retail stores, |
27 |
| as an accounts payable clerk until her retirement; and
|
28 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of Doris J. Patterson has been deeply |
29 |
| felt by many, especially her children, DiAna McCarter, Raymond |
30 |
| (Faith) McCarter, Deborah (Robert) Hayes, Samuel A. McCarter, |
