| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois |
3 |
| learned with regret of the death of Mary Smith on Wednesday, |
4 |
| April 6, 2005; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, She was born on April 9, 1955, in East St. Louis |
6 |
| to Luzia and Isom McCaleb; she was educated in the public |
7 |
| school system of East St. Louis and received her bachelor's |
8 |
| degree from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and her |
9 |
| master's degree from National Louis University; and
|
10 |
| WHEREAS, She was employed with the Riverview Gardens School |
11 |
| District as an Instructional Guide at Gibson Elementary School; |
12 |
| as an educator for many years, she touched the lives of more |
13 |
| than a thousand students as she instilled in them the power of |
14 |
| faith, a determination to achieve dreams beyond what their |
15 |
| environment offered, and a motivation to never give up; she was |
16 |
| known for taking less fortunate students on trips to local |
17 |
| department stores for school supplies and new school clothes; |
18 |
| and
|
19 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith enjoyed simple things like shopping for |
20 |
| good deals, cooking, exercising, and having fun; most will |
21 |
| remember her as always laughing and talking on the phone, and |
22 |
| all will remember her as being a sincere giver and a smiling |
23 |
| helper; she was a gentle and passionate relative, a loving |
24 |
| friend, and a dedicated worker; she always gave more than she |
25 |
| had to help meet the needs of others; and
|
26 |
| WHEREAS, She professed a hope in Christ at an early age and |
27 |
| later united with St. Louis Christian Center; she was a family |
28 |
| leader, an encourager, a supporter, and an inspiration; and
|
29 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of Mary Smith has been deeply felt by |
30 |
| many, especially her devoted husband, Ellis; her daughter, |
