| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 |
| representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to |
4 |
| the family and friends of Don Hubert of Chicago, Illinois, who |
5 |
| passed away on November 27, 2006; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, Don Hubert was raised in a Chicago family of seven |
7 |
| children; in a Chicago Lawyer magazine article, after being |
8 |
| named 1992 Person of the Year by the publication, Mr. Hubert |
9 |
| recounted spending summers with his grandmother in Georgia and |
10 |
| how he would pick cotton with her, trying to build his pile |
11 |
| higher and higher onto the scale that would determine how much |
12 |
| he would be paid; and |
13 |
| WHEREAS,
In grade school, Don Hubert asked for a wagon for |
14 |
| Christmas so he could deliver groceries to earn money for |
15 |
| tuition at Hales Franciscan; he is credited with helping Hales |
16 |
| Franciscan High School keep its doors open when the school |
17 |
| needed help; he generously donated the proceeds of the first |
18 |
| case he won to the school; he led a capital campaign for Hales |
19 |
| Franciscan, persuading Michael Jordan to give $1 million to |
20 |
| kick off a $15 million fund-raising effort; and |
21 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Hubert served as the second African-American |
22 |
| president of the Chicago Bar Association; he represented the |
23 |
| City of Chicago in a federal redistricting case; he won |
24 |
| acquittals for men falsely accused of murder; and raised his |
25 |
| now 12-year-old daughter Jessica on his own after his wife, |
26 |
| Mellonie, died; and
|
27 |
| WHEREAS, He was considered among the top leaders in |
28 |
| Chicago's African-American community, and was frequently |
29 |
| sought after as an adviser and fund-raiser by African-American |
30 |
| politicians;
he created a mentoring program through the Cook |
31 |
| County Bar Association to train new lawyers to avoid getting |
