| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the |
3 |
| State of Illinois wish to recognize the 100th anniversary of |
4 |
| the Foellinger Auditorium in 2007; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, Among the oldest buildings on campus, the |
6 |
| Foellinger Auditorium has become the image of the University of |
7 |
| Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, overlooking the Quad with its |
8 |
| 120-foot-diameter dome and Northern Italian Renaissance |
9 |
| design; and
|
10 |
| WHEREAS, The Foellinger Auditorium began as the idea of |
11 |
| President Edmund Janes James, who wished to create a noble |
12 |
| monument dedicated to music in his quest to make the university |
13 |
| a world-class institution; Clarence Blackall was selected as |
14 |
| the architect to design the auditorium; a scaled-back version |
15 |
| of what Blackall had conceived was implemented due to lack of |
16 |
| funding; and
|
17 |
| WHEREAS, Many students, staff, faculty, public figures, |
18 |
| orators, educators, and scientists have spoken or performed at |
19 |
| the auditorium; Sergei Rachmaninoff, Artur Rubenstein, Igor |
20 |
| Stravinsky, John Phillip Sousa, Marian Anderson, Jane Adams, |
21 |
| Robert Frost, Ravi Shankar, Duke Ellington, Eleanor Roosevelt, |
22 |
| R. Buckminster Fuller, Maya Angelou, and Bill Gates have all |
23 |
| appeared there; and
|
24 |
| WHEREAS, Renovations over the last century have kept the |
25 |
| building up with changing times; in 1983 an alumni gift allowed |
26 |
| the University to fulfill Blackall's original aspirations for |
27 |
| the Auditorium; and
|
28 |
| WHEREAS, The pineapple placed on the top of the dome is the |
29 |
| international symbol of welcome; therefore, be it
