| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, Ignacio "Joe" Pena, Chief of Police in East |
3 |
| Dundee, Illinois, has announced his retirement; and
|
4 |
| WHEREAS, Ignacio Pena was born and raised on the north side |
5 |
| of Chicago; he joined the Marine Corps in 1968, where he served |
6 |
| a tour of duty in Vietnam and rose to the rank of Sergeant; and
|
7 |
| WHEREAS, In 1970 he married his high school sweetheart, |
8 |
| Leona; together they have raised three children, Ignacio, Jr., |
9 |
| Christine, and Jacob; and
|
10 |
| WHEREAS, He applied to join the ranks of the East Dundee |
11 |
| Police Department in 1974; in 1975 he became a full-time |
12 |
| officer, and he was appointed Police Chief in 1986; his fluency |
13 |
| in the Spanish language made him an asset to the department and |
14 |
| helped assist in communications with the East Dundee Latino |
15 |
| community; and
|
16 |
| WHEREAS, In 2006 Chief Pena became President of the |
17 |
| Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police; as co-chair of Fight |
18 |
| Crime: Invest in Kids Illinois, he has promoted programs to |
19 |
| help children get the right start in life and stay on a |
20 |
| positive life track; the programs are supported by over 140 |
21 |
| police chiefs, sheriffs, states' attorneys, police |
22 |
| organizations, and crime survivors; and
|
23 |
| WHEREAS, Chief Pena's proudest professional accomplishment |
24 |
| is his work with the Illinois Special Olympics; he serves as |
25 |
| the Chairman of the Law Enforcement Torch Run Committee, |
26 |
| volunteering time and raising money, in addition to working |
27 |
| with the athletes; he was inducted into the International |
28 |
| Special Olympics Hall of Fame in 1998 for his hard work and |
29 |
| commitment to the organization; therefore, be it
